They are a round ball gun, 1:66 twist. They will shoot bullets, but not as good as the patched round ball.

Midsouth is usually the best you can do as far as price. I have a 54 caplock GPR I built from a kit. I shoot patched round balls in mine. There are two versions, the Great Plains Rifle is slow twist for balls, 1:60. The Great Plains Hunter is a fast twist for sabots. You can buy an extra barrel if you want.

I have the Lyman Trade rifle .54 cal that I'll be taking on my Alta hunt in a couple of days and it's a great rifle. I used to shoot the Hornady Great plains bullets but switched to the Powerbelt bullets this year, they shoot awesome

The faster twist must be newer, when I got mine that wasn't an option (1994)

Really depends on how far you want to pursue the traditional aspect of muzzleloading. If you aren't interested in shooting prb, then I'd say the selection of bullets/sabots in .50 will probably be better than .54. Do you want to look traditional, or hunt with traditional gear?

your bullet selection will be a lot more in the 50cal and there is no advantage to the 54cal that i have ever seen

I have used the Lyman, but I like the T/C Hawkin better. I like the 1 in 48 twist. You can shoot bullets or roundballs.

I have the .54 GPR. Picked mine up on Gunbroker. I'm sticking strictly with roundball for now. Haven't had any problems once I put a new nipple on. Looking forward to the late hunt also.

I've got a 50 cal Lyman with the 1:66 twist and I shoot traditional round balls. I've elk hunted with it but have only killed a coyote with it. If you enoy traditional, I think you'll like it. Mine came with a really beautiful walnut stock.
