Which Rifle Lyman 50 or Thompson Center 50 to buy
« on: November 24, 2009, 12:29:21 PM »
Buying a rifle for Christmas present for myself.  Hunt deer and elk.  Getting into muzzleloader hunting, Traditional.  Lyman Trade Rifle and T/C Hawken that I have been looking at  Mid South Shooters Supply had some good prices.  Caliber 50 caliber looking at as everything available, or maybe 54 cal.  What do you think?  At the Muzzleloader Store in Puyallup, Wash (along River Road) had a T/C Hawken Green Mt Barrel in 1-66 twist  for Ball only.  I think he wanted $350

Seems a little pricey... I bought my X-150 from Muzzleloader Supply on River Rd.... 6 or 7 years ago.... He's a great guy... Has the equipment you can't find anywhere else.... And does great work on your guns and taxadermy.... Some of the prices are a lttle much imo.... But it is a great Mom and Pop store.... Specially when you need it now....

You may want to shoot a full bore conical or even a saboted bullet down the road. I have read that anything over a 1 in 48 twist may not stabilize a conical bullet. :twocents:

Both are quality rifles.  I would go with .54 cal if chasing elk.  Round balls are fine for both in .54 cal.
