well i already have a .270 and if I am going to change i think i should change big. not slight :dunno:

there is definately something to going all the way if you do go. I support your thinking.

too bad it wasnt a savage, sauer 202, or a blaser R93. could have bought the parts and done it yourself. lol.

You know what, sounds like it's time to get a new rifle. lol
yea new rifle may make more sense :dunno:

if you were thinking about being different than everyone else did you look into a 7x64 maybe? You'd probably be the only one in your hunting camp with one.

it's funny cuz one of the most (if not the most) popular calibers over here is the 30.06. lol. apparentley the americans made something right.

Really? I never would have thought that. Just figured they wouldn't like it just because of the name, it's not the diameter in millimeters x the length in millimeters like all their cartridges. By the way, I think their way of naming cartridges makes a whole lot more sense than the way we do it.

i concur. american ammo companies are wackos. i think they just like seeing their company name on other companies rifles.

i was talking with my buddy over here the other day about how germans concentrate much more on the bullet they are shooting rather than the cartrigde as opposed to americans who want a cartrigde with some zing and a cool name.  ofcourse there are exceptions to this but i do see the trend.

If you want something just slightly different, with only a ream job, you could have the 270win chambered for 270Win Ackley Improved for a little more velocity.

The earlier comments about the 280 have value, but not just to rebarrel a rifle that shoots well already. And no, rechambering to 7mm RemMag would not be cost effective at all.

So.. If you can get a barrel for free that's in good shape, then start looking for an action that's suited to that barrel. Bare actions with trued bolts are available. Put your own trigger in. Find a stock you like. Glass/pillar bed it.. Wellah! You've built a rifle! And.. you still have your 270!

The barrel he was getting free is a 7mm.  That's not gonna work for that .30cal ought 6!

You could have gone with the 280 AI. It will give near 7mm Mag performance on you action without any mods. If you don't want to handload, loaded ammo is available from Nosler. I'm actually surprised that nobody mentioned it yet.

Having shot 7mm Mags and 270's for alot of years I don't see alot of different in the two as far as killing game.  The only advantage I found in the 7 is that I cuold get 175gr RN's for hunting the blackmarshes of N MN where you don't always get a nice broadside shot and have to take them from any direction. Even there the 300Sav 180gr RN and any 30cal with 180-220 RN's were just as good or better.

If you need more mussle move up a couple of calibers.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I saw the comment about the 280 not being much of a step up. That's why I recomended the AI version. It's much closer to the 7mm Mag than it is to the 270. In fact it nearly matches the mag with some loads.
