The last one I had done cost about $350. That was a custom bbl, supplied by me and the smith had to thread, chamber, cut to length, crown the bbl. and screw it together. I'm looking for a new gunsmith so I cant recommend anyone. If you have a 270 bbl, its .277. a 7mm is .284 so its alot more then just reaming the chamber, more then I personaly would have done, I'd try and sell the bbl and get a 7mm bbl. What brand of bbl do you have?

good catch jamieb! you'll need a magnum action to do that. if you want my  :twocents: build a 6.5 x .284 the ballistics will compete with a 7mm out to 1000

It sounded to me like jdb already has a 7mm barrel and wants to have it installed on his 270, and have the chamber reamed out. He just didn't specify which cartridge. That's why I asked. I'm assuming 280 Remington. Not sure what else a guy could go to without a lot more work.

bobcat is correct i maybe getting a used barrel from a 7mm i thought I could have my model 700 .270 rechambered to 7mm remington magnum, but you guys make it sound as though .280 is my only real option and one im not interested in.

if you have a 7mm barrel you can have it rechambered to 7mm Mag, your bolt face will need work also as the base size is much different.
Not my Bus. but a 280 is a far better 7mm than the mag, check the numbers,140 grain, 25% less powder, 80% longer barrrel life and at 500 yards the mag is about 2 inches flatter than the 280. 160 grain is not much different.

I also think the 280 Rem. would be a great choice. But it sounds like you want more velocity?

So there's nothing wrong with your current Remington 700 in 270?  If not, then yeah I wouldn't go to the expense of changing it to a 280. I thought maybe the barrel needed replacing anyway, in which case it would make sense to go with a 280 Rem since you'd be getting the barrel for free.

there is definately something to going all the way if you do go. I support your thinking.

too bad it wasnt a savage, sauer 202, or a blaser R93. could have bought the parts and done it yourself. lol.

You know what, sounds like it's time to get a new rifle. lol
