Ruger No. 1

Adding another gun to my "must have" list.  The No. 1.  I've lusted after this gun for ever - but cannot decide on how I'd set it up...

Anybody have one?  What caliber?  How do you have it set up?

I'm a big '06 fan for the utility, but this gun would be more of a "special" deal.  I'm know it's going to get used for hunting (not a big believer in museum pieces), but am having a hard time picking the caliber.  Single-shot varminter?  .375 H&H (Believe it or not, I know a Good Ol' Boy that uses one for deer)?  I know I'd like something that my '06 can't be made to replicate, that is a given.  But that is a pretty wide range of calibers.  An exotic caliber might be the deal...

A buddy of nine has a ruger #1 in 45-70. Beautiful gun and fun to shoot. He keeps talking about wanting to shoot a bear with it. (I think the one shot thing is the reason he hasn't  ). Kicks like a mule ......but that will be my next gun. Plain and simple iron sights.

i have three, 218 bee, 22-250, and a 375 h&h. the 375 will beat the crap out of you. great guns though!

Either 45-70 or 405 Winchester....I have a #1 in 45-70 and a few #3s in 45-70, one of which will turn into a 475 Linebaugh to match my Freedom Arms in 475 Linebaugh. Also have them in 30-06, 7x57 Mauser, .375 Winchester, .44 Mag and .357 Mag.  I like them I do..but like the #3 just as well, especially with #1 forends and losing the barrel band..

I've got one set up for Elk.  338 Winchester Magnum with fixed Leupold 6X scope.  Nice rifle.

I have a No. 1 in .300 weatherby mag and .270 weatherby mag. My dad has one that is a custom .22 rimfire, .270 weatherby mag, .243 and just acquired one in .204 ruger.  Probably one of my favorite rifles. His .270 is topped with an IOR my .300 is topped with a Doctor. The .22 has a Leuy if I remember. My .270 is bare but I'll end up most likely putting either a Vari X III 3-10x50 or spend the extra cash on a Nightforce. Those mag calibers are outstanding flat shooting long distance rifles. I guess it depends on what caliber and what type of shooting you are doing to decide on the optics. You can never go wrong with Leuy though in my opinion. A good rule of thumb is don't cheat a nice rifle with cheap glass. I always try to put the highest quality glass on all my higher end rifles.

I have one in 25-06 that I'd be willing to sell for a fair price. I love it, bought it because I loved the #1 since I first saw one. But it's a safe queen, and I'm not the type to have a safe queen!

I love owning the gun, love shooting it. Planned to hunt with it, but I have other guns that I don't worrry about smashing around, this one is beautiful. I really love the gun, but I've had it for several years and never taken it to the field.

I had one in 45-70 with a 1.5-5x20mm Simmons shotgun scope at a 100yds with leverevolution rnds it would group one big hole i sold it because i was stupid . i hope to get another on in ss/lam.

My grandpa has a No. 1 in .25-06 with a burris fullfield II on it. Its a sweet shooter for sure.

Home Skillet is this a want gun or are you going to actually purchase it?

This gun was in the que for a "want gun" behind a 1894 in 30-30, but it is getting moved up ahead after I played with one last week and didn't get that "feeling"... I got that feeling the one time I ever held a No. 1.  Time is right, and I've made room in the safe.

Great ideas.  I like the big-bore, open-sight concept.  It just looks GOOD that way.  And I am really leaning towards a non-scoped gun.  But, a varminter is needed in the safe - and a 25-06 would be a great deer/yote combo (not selling the pelts, just helping out a rancher I know).  I actually have a Vari X III 3.5x10 40mm I would put on it, and put a Leupold fixed 4x on my featherweight 30-06.  A lot lighter, and I've found I shoot better offhand with a fixed power scope I'm very familiar with than a variable.

I have a few, but my 45-70 is just about perfect with a 3X scope.
