I really like the barnes ez loader 290 grain ballistic tip bullets.  I have only harvested one deer with them but they group good and kill even better. Entered front right shoulder and exited behind the rib cage.  The entry hole was as big as the exit hole (couldn't tell the difference...amazing should have taken pics).  The blood channel was so intense it was shooting out of the side animal, for a very quick kill.  I am confident this bullet would drop any game on earth if the shot was placed in the kill zone.  They open up and they don't stop.  :)

But, alot of energy is not used with the barnes.  These are a pass through bullet on deer (like a 1900fps second arrow with an expanding broadhead).   So, I'm still very curious about the all copper, non jacketed, barrel fitting, thor bullet on the powerbelt forum sight.  These are a longer lighter bullet that would stop better on impact, with the barnes exploding %100 percent weight retention design. They sell them in barrel matching increments from .500-.503 fifty cal only right now though.  Anyone try these?

Since all-lead bullets are no longer required I don't have a new favorite yet. Haven't had a chance to try anything new. I'm currently shooting a .54 so my choices are somewhat limited. The first bullet I'm going to try is the 348 grain Powerbelt. I'd also like to try the Barnes. If the Barens shoots good and loads easily I'll probably end up going with it.

I've only shot patched round balls from my .54.  Hard to compare to the modern bullets, all I can tell you is that of the 3 balls I've shot deer with, all were pass throughs with big holes.  They cost about 10 cents each.

havent used the muzz on elk, but for deer the 240gr lead hollow point. (hornady sell as 'cheap shot' sabot) has done well. the 300gr xtp sabot has done well too. but that has been on whitetails. not elk.
