correction : it does in fact use a #11 and does have the 1 in 48 twist    I talked to t/c on Friday and went to wholesale sports today and talked to their muzzleloader guy and it should be just fine to use a musket nipple on it . i had to go to sportco to get the right one for it . for the t/c brand nipple it was only $5.00.

they had some of the same guns at wholesale sports on sale because they had the 1in48 twist and couldnt sell them they were like a hundred bucks less than the others . but this one i made sure it had the faster twist before i bought it.

Can you take that one back now that you know it has the 1 in 48 twist and go to Wholesale Sports and get the same gun for $100 less?

the ones that are hundred dollars less are in fact the "omega" not the "northwest explorer's" . sorry for the confusion.

o.k been away for awhile just got back a few hours ago, i stoped by the wholesale sports on the way back from our trip it seems you got it figured out now they only have the 1:48 which is what i thought it is up to you but the 1:48 will not shoot very well from my experience cons might shoot but all that i read was patch round balls was the best out of that gun. if it is not shot they might take it back if you tell them its not what you thought it was and won't work for you. but thats up to you i also put a call into t/c and they said that they do not advise you to use musket caps in that gun and it would void the warrenty with it as well if a guy used them  :bash: that is why i am done with t/c they don't lisen to what the people want won't see any of my money for a long long time  :chuckle: glad we got you set right :chuckle: if you have any questions shoot me a email i have been hunting with a muzzle loader since i was 15 and shooting one since i was 12.

I've used those bullets but don't care for them just because I don't like having to deal with the lube. But other than that they should be fine for hunting, as long as they shoot in your rifle.

WTF did they make it in 1:48 twist for??  This would be a really nice gun if it was in 1:28 twist like every other modern muzzle loader.

I shot power belt bullets 348 gr in my muzzleloader 1:48 and they shot fine in fact very good.
At least try them no lube needed !!!,I'm sure someone has a few you could try.
I'll look and see if i still have some.

WTF did they make it in 1:48 twist for??

Probably for use in other states like Oregon, in which saboted bullets are not allowed. They apparently made it to be legal in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, according to the information on their website. Personally I don't think the 1 in 48 twist is the end of the world. It shouldn't be difficult to find a bullet that will shoot in that twist.

what is it about the lube that you don't like ? what bullet do you use ?

Lube is just messy and I don't see a reason to use bullets that require it when there are other options that don't require it. Such as the powerbelt as dawhunt suggested.

I still have some 444grn powerbelts left over from a muzzloader my dad bought a few years back that i will shoot up. I was looking in the little pamphlet that comes with the Hornady great plains bullets and it says "great plains and other conical bullets shoot best in firearms with 1-48" or faster barrel twists. Barrels with a slower "round ball" twist (1-66") may not stabilize the bullet."

The Great Plains bullets will be good for breaking in your barrel and sighting it in. For hunting I'd try to find a different bullet. Those 444 grain Powerbelts should be a good bullet. I always wanted to try those. I think those are the flat points, while all the other Powerbelts are hollow points. That 444 would be the one I'd want for elk.

I think I'll stick to my T/C Black Diamond.  I bet it shoots my SST sabots more accurately than this Northwest gun and I already have a really good set up.  I was just interested in it because of ease of cleaning.  Oh well.
