Got a new RCBS RC Supreme Master reloading kit
« on: February 14, 2010, 12:06:45 PM »
Went to Cabelas yesterday, with the intent on using my $40 off 300 coupon I got in the mail the day before.  I was going to pick up the RCBS kit, and figured I'd save myself $40.  Got there, they had them on sale for $40 off already.  Doubled up on that deal, saving $80.  I was able to buy the kit, another set of dies for my .223, 2 shell holders, a two sets of case trimmers, and a couple of other things for less than the cost of the kit.    The press is a tank!

Welcome to the madness!!!!  You are set up for life now!  Great buy too.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Thanks guys.  I'd contemplated going with Lee because of the price, but I think I'll be glad I spent a little more.  I've heard nothing but good about this setup, while with the Lee it seemed hit or miss and sooner or later I'd trade up to RCBS.

I decided to handload because I'm tired of driving around to stores hoping they had my ammo in stock.  That was the real madness.  I've got a 30.06 and a .223 that it's hard to find decent ammo on the shelves, unless I want to spend 2 bucks a round.  That gets real expensive fast when going to the Tacoma Sportsmens club for an hour or two twice a month.

a couple of weeks ago I got a 1000+ once fired .223 cases, for $44 off of GB.  Threw them in the tumbler, and even after throwing out the damaged ones, the savings will still pay for the cost of the kit, power and bullets.

It's got the rock chucker supreme press, 5-0-5 scale, uniflow powder dispenser, loading block, funnel, a big thick speer loading manual, deburring tool, hand primer, case lube and pad, 2 inside case brushes, and a set of hex keys.  The press is heavy duty cast iron and steel, not aluminum like some.

It's listed at $329 on Cabelas site, and I priced out every item individually there.  It would be $460 if you bought everything on their own.  It comes with a primer arm, so that you can prime your cases using the press if you want, but I prefer to use the hand primer.  Much faster.

About the only thing I can think of thats missing from that kit is a set of dial calipers. A case trimmer isnt absolutly needed right off the bat but you'll add one at some point.

You may want to give the primer arm a shot.  I was using the hand priming tool until I started loading .223.  My shell holder was out of spec and the primer tool would shove the cases out of the holder and damage the rims.  I started using the primer arm, and it takes the same amount of time.  You just set the primer in the arm before the downstroke of resizing.  Too easy!

Good kit, and if you only paid 249 after the discounts even better, i am always suprised how prices vary for the exact same items.
Cabelas list it for 329
midway nas it for 305
and i swore i saw the same kit at wholsale sports for 289

I'll give the primer arm a try.  I thought what would slow you down is taking the time to get the anvil in the correct position.  Is there a good way of taking care of that?  I was thinking I could use the primer tray that attaches to the hand tool to flip them the right way, and then taking the lid off.

On the powder dispenser, is there any correlation between the numbers on the adjustment screw and how many grains it dispenses? Is the 5 roughly 50 grains, 8 is 80 grains, etc... or is it just trial and error?

I was surprised to get it for $250.  I had been waiting for it to go on sale, and have been watching the mailed fliers.  I don't remember seeing the kit on sale, and was watching on line, but it didn't change.  I decided to wait until they sent an email or something in the mail, and use that discount to buy.  (Cabelas is always sending something to club members.)  I got the postcard in the mail for $40 off, and was going to be happy with that.  Went in the next day and had a big sale sign over the kit for $290.  It was an in store only sale.  Snatched it off the shelf fast.  I tried midway and other places, but because the press is so heavy, the shipping costs always brought it up to more than if I just bought it at full price from walking into Cabelas.  RCBS even has a $10 rebate, so it will end up costing $240.

Yep, I use the primer tray and just shake them until they flip over.  On my dispenser, the numbers will get you somewhat close, but it's mostly trial and error.  One more thing you might want to pick up is a powder trickler.  When I first started reloading (All of 6 months ago ) I decided that for precision's sake I would weigh every charge.  It has seriously cut down my reloading time throwing the charge a little under weight then adding with the powder trickler.
