Shot my first Vegas tourney today. Shot a 416. Not to shabby I'd say. My first time shooting for a score was a 338.

I'm new to spot shooting, what format are you shooting? Normally a Vegas round is 30 shots, 300 30x possible.

It was the same as a 300, just more arrows.

Nice to see another competitive shooter here! OK, I don't shoot archery, I shoot indoor and outdoor Bullseye Standard Pistol. While not my first match, I shot an outdoor 2700 at Paul Bunyan range in Puyallup on Saturday. This was the primer short range match 'first of the season' at 25yds on reduced targets. (normally slowfire is shot at 50yds) .22 rimfire- 30rnds of 3 ten shot targets for SF, then 3 targets of timed fire and 3 targets of rapid fire against turning targets. Do it all again with centerfire, then do it again with 45acp. One hand shooting. Total of 270 shots from 9:am to just about 3:pm. (lunch break mid day) I scored my personal best with a 2496 which is middle range of the expert class. Good enough for 3rd place overall for the day. (Winner shot 2556 -He is a Master)
What is the Vegas 450 format? At what ranges are arrows flung? Is there a time limit for each shot? Do matches result in cash awards or prizes for good shooters? How many participant attend matches?

The format is 3 arrows at a 3 spot target. Scoring ranges from 10 down to 6, with the very middle ring being the X which is used for ties. Range is 20 yards. You get 2 and half minutes to shoot your 3 arrows. In a 450, there are 15 "ends" which is like a round. There were cash prizes. I didn't even come close. The best score was a 448. That's 43 10's and 2 9's. This was a smaller match, with about 25 people shooting. I wouldn't say I'm a competitive shooter. I was the only one using a hunting rig with a whisker biscuit and hunting arrows. If I were using the fat target arrows, I would've scored a bit better with the larger margine of error.

Bull Pucky! Even if for only a short while, you became a competitor yesterday. You put your money where your mouth is and gave it your best shot. I've got friends that when I explain what I've been doing for the last five years with my pistol shooting, they say.. 'Oh, I could do well in that'. Bull Snot! It's a whole different ball game when you step up to the line and actually prove it. Having thought that I was a pretty good shot all these years, I was certainly humbled when I tried my hand at it. I've stuck with it to move on to Master class indoor this season (designation forthcoming). But at the long line shooting against all the old timers that have been to the nationals and such, I'm still a lowly Sharpshooter. (I'll make Expert within the next match or two).
So, you shot undersized arrows with a hunting bow. Add 1.5% if you used the target arrows. Add 1.5% if you shot a competition bow. That would bring your score to 95%, which is not too shabby in just about any shooting competition.
