GMU 666 & 7 vandals
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:59:40 AM »
I was thinking about heading to the Skukumchuck area this weekend with the grandson for some scouting. Havent been there for years but am wondering if vandals are a problem. IIRC there is a parking area down on the river that used to be fairly safe. I remember seeing deer and turkey across the river by the parking area a decade or so ago.

Thank you
Don

You mean down on the Skookumchuck at the Pheasant Release Site? If so that is GMU 667, not 666.

I believe that is the area. Right on Skookumchuck rd just past Johnson creek rd there is a spot on the left. Down abit further there is a spot on the right usually where all the horse trailers park. Years ago it was a nice safe area and sometimes had the damn security folks hanging around.

Thank you
Don

Should be a lot of guys steelhead fishing there this time of year.  I would think that the extra traffic and fishermen around may help prevent some vandalism....... :dunno:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

As Curly said...should be alright, but with everything the way it is anymore, don't leave something in the rig you don't want to lose.

I've been hunting that area since 1987; send me a PM on how I can get a hold of you & I'll take you scouting.

Just be sure if you park there you dont go up the power lines unless you have permission from the land owner first , the first hill is all private.  There are a few that will tresspass through there. There is new land owners as far as I know, they clear cut the top of the hill on both sides  of the powerline.  There was a murder in that parking lot you are talking about  a few years back , but dont let that discourage you  :chuckle: You should be fine, I live right accrossed from Johnson creek road. You will get the occasional local hoodlum on a motor bike doing doughnuts in the parking lot but vandalism shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks for all the advice folks. It would be nice to meet up with some other hunters. My wife had a slip and fall so wasnt up to much walking but we did have a nice drive to the area. Beautiful weekend and stumbled across the Fletch Setter archery shop, nice little bonus. Would have been nice to find some turkeys but life goes on.
I still dont understand the regulations regarding hunting on the game reserves such as the Skookumchuck, Scatter Creek etc. Im not a Pheasant hunter but would be interest to find out if turkey, deer and elk are allowed. Ive always assumed there was no hunting allowed until I talked to a guy that claimed to take a nice archery deer there last year. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you
Don

The WDFW Wildlife Areas such as Skookumchuck and Scatter Creek are FOR hunting. That is their reason for being. So yes they're open for anything that is in season, pretty much.
