Story of a friend from Wasilla that was mauled
« on: February 20, 2010, 08:56:56 PM »
This story is old from 89. Don was woods wise and happy go lucky. He was wearing his prized hat; he was one of three members of a crab boat that were still alive. No, the boat never sunk but this crew was close over the years and as each when there merry way some died. After the second mauling Don did not leave the "combat zone" until he found his hat. He thought he was blind in one eye up to this point also, but upon finding the hat and trying to get it on his head he discovered that his scalp was hanging in the way of his eye. Once he scooped the scalp back and lock and cocked his hat on then the hair stayed in place. On the walk back to the high way he immersed himself in the local stream to cool off his body as he felt that he was getting hot. Surgeons stated that this action probably slowed down some of the bleeding. I'll quit blabbing, just click of the link and read this old news paper report.

Just what I need to read after my buddies and I decided today to plan a 2012 Alaska bear hunt.   :chuckle:

On my first trip into the Brooks Range my Pilot told me not to worry much about the bears up there, hadn't been an attack in 15+ years that he knew of, by a Griz at least.

Two weeks before my 3rd trip (5 in a row 02-06) A couple from Anchorage was killed on the HulaHula, just a few drainages away from my put in. He had known them 20 years. When he picked me up he said one of his long time customers, a guy that hikes ANWR for 60+days every year and was to pick up three days before me, had been mauled 3 days from trips end. The Griz he surprised took a chunk of thigh before he got to spray it. The bear fled and he was able to get the State Troopers via Sat. Phone. He was just a few miles from the Dalton hwy.

He was sure glad to see me A-OK. Saw 2-3 bears on each of trips 2-5. Most ran at the sight/smell of me. Especially the one that caught me peeing....I wont say/brag what really scared that one.. :chuckle:

Needless to say my Pilot was pretty rattled to have had 3 long time customers attacked with two killed and fed on in the space of a month.

Don, was mauled south of the Big igloo on the Parks Highwy. Remember how we could put in for land aka homestead property for recreation. Don had land west of the Parks I think it is near (spelling?) Kashwitna Creek.
