:o  That's got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard!!!!   Anyone know the states logic behind this one? :bdid:  Man I thought the Fish and Game in Utah had some stupid laws.   This one may take the cake.

Although in Utah, if you have an archery tag you're not allowed a fire arm in camp at all, not even if there's none hunters with you.   So you can not protect your family unless you have a CWP.   You can have a pistol however to protect your livestock, but not your family. :P

welcome to washington there base for that decision is that it helps the bow hunter which we all know is not true all you gain from it is being able to see your arrow impact the animal and helps find it, no gain on anything else and does not make it kill better or add range or anything, washington just switched last year to is you have a cwp you can carry for personal protection the first time in a long time also they let us muzzleloaders use jacketed bullets for the first time last year. so they have been giving a bit. maybe they fill bad with all the wolves they are dumping around and destroying our ecosystem.

might want to throw in there that you have to use 40# pull or greater.  as said before no battery operated equipment (ie lumen nocks, led pin lights etc..), read the regs they can be confusing but the major stuff is pretty well spelled out in plain english

good luck

"That's got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard!!!!   Anyone know the states logic behind this one?"

Lines had to be drawn somewhere on the gadgets and gizmos; otherwise we'd end up with Lord-knows-what in archery season*. One such line was drawn at electronics.

[* Archery seasons would already be unrecognizable to Pope, Young, Compton, the Thompsons, Duyree, Case, Hill, Stevenson, etc.]
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood.  After you figure out the 2009 regulations look on line at the 2010 proposals (keep the hammer close):violent1: Every one may be able to carry a concealed hand gun this year. :chuckle:

Actually, Snappy, it is not that hard to say, no electronics on the bow.  They did not have to include arrows at all since, as far as I know there are no wire guided or heat seeking arrows around....  And, how are "seasons" not recognizeable?  Maybe gear used is a little more advanced but it still throws a stick off a hand drawn string.

Get off your high horse unless you are shooting a hand-made stickbow with cedar arrows, turkey fletches (not shot with a cartridge shotgun) and hand-forged or stone tips.   :twocents:

Sorry, Lokidog, I had been out riding my horse and only just now dropped by, and find your post. Thanks.

Lesseee... Hand-made stickbow; check, hand-made (fir, cedar, ash) wood arrows; bunches of those, turkey feathers; got 'em. Hmmmm. But nope, I buy quality steel broadheads because I have never had the inclination to learn how to make my own, nor can I knapp worth a hoot. Getting down off my high horse now...

...but will say again that, that in my opinion, there is no resemblance whatsoever in archery hunting of the pre-1970's to what folks today call bowhunting. It lacks the discipline, the athleticism and the guts. I was just born too late.

Archery Regulations
1. Rules pertaining to all archery:
a. It is unlawful for any person to carry or
have in his possession any firearm while in
the field archery hunting, during an archery
season specified for that area, except for
modern handguns carried for personal
protection if that person possesses a
concealed pistol license as defined by
RCW 9.41.070.
Modern handguns cannot
be used to hunt big game or dispatch
wounded big game during an archery, big
game hunting season.
b. It is unlawful to have any electrical
equipment or electric device(s) attached to
the bow or arrow while hunting.
c. It is unlawful to shoot a bow and arrow
from a vehicle or from, across or along the
maintained portion of a public highway,
except persons with a disabled hunter
permit may shoot from a vehicle if the
hunter is in compliance with WAC 232-12-
828.
d. It is unlawful to use any device secured to
or supported by the bow for the purpose
of maintaining the bow at full draw or in
a firing position, except persons with an
archery special use permit may hunt game
birds or game animals using a device that
stabilizes and holds a long bow, recurve
bow, or compound bow at a full draw, and
may use a mechanical or electrical release.
e. It is unlawful to hunt wildlife with a
crossbow, except in firearm restriction
areas. However, disabled hunter permittees
in possession of a crossbow special use
permit may hunt with a crossbow in any
season that allows archery equipment.
f. It is unlawful to hunt big game animals
with any arrow or bolt that does not have a
sharp broadhead, and the broadhead blade
or blades are less than seven-eighths inch
wide.
g. It is unlawful to hunt big game animals with
a broadhead blade unless the broadhead
is unbarbed and completely closed at
the back end of the blade or blades by
a smooth, unbroken surface starting at
maximum blade width forming a smooth
line toward the feather end of the shaft and
such line does not angle toward the point.
h. It is unlawful to hunt wildlife with any bow
or crossbow equipped with a scope. Except
hunters with disabilities who meet the
definition of being visually impaired in WAC
232-12-828 may receive a special use
permit that would allow the use of scopes
or other visual aids. A disabled hunter
permit holder in possession of a special
use permit that allows the use of a scope
or visual aid may hunt game birds or game
animals during archery seasons.
2. Rules pertaining to long bow, recurve bow and
compound bow archery:
a. It is unlawful for any person to hunt big
game animals with a bow that possesses
less than 40 pounds of pull measured at
twenty-eight inches or less draw length.
b. It is unlawful to hunt big game animals with
any arrow measuring less than 20 inches
in length or weighing less than 6 grains per
pound of draw weight with a minimum arrow
weight of 300 grains.

Contrary to alot of our complaints FB, this state is actually pretty nice with the exception of the state government. Let us know what we can do to help your transition! Also a law degree would help with the regulations interpretation. :chuckle:
