bird question
« on: February 26, 2010, 08:30:35 AM »
Is there a way to rehydrate whole freezer birds.  I have a couple that have some serious dehydrated issues.   I imagine when thawed they'll be a bitch to skin.  I might be reaching but thought I'd ask

soak them in dawn water for 30-45 minutes before you start skinning them then hang them up for 20 min. or so to let the extra water drip off.  just did one like that and it worked great

soak them like said in dawn water, if you have a syringe also inject the feet and help them rehydrate

I inject the feet and around the bill/beak with warm water. If that doesn't work to your satisfaction do the same with ammonia it works great.

Bone, a lot of good advise mentioned.  If you can find it at your local super market, pick up some "Sudsy Ammonia", and inject as Elkstuffer mentioned.  Also, once you get the skin around the bill off, inject as you go until you get that skin over the head to the neck.  Be careful around those eyes!

If your not going to flesh right away, soak in Dawn and Luke warm water for about a half hour, then wrap it really good and put back in the freezer.  If you let it sit out for any length of time, you will start getting feather slippage which is not good.  Freezer burned skin is notorious for that.  Hope that helps.

By the way what kind of ducks are they?  John
