Check out Savage. If you google Savage firearms you will find their site. Savage and Stevens both offer some great deals on Rifle/scope packages.  Keep in mind though the scope that comes with a sub 300$ rifle will be a poor one.

Gallery of Guns.com  Their GunGenie feature will help you find stuff too as well as different dealers to have them shipped to.

I like Savages too, but take a look here:

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/centerfireBoltAction/XS7.asp

My son has this in the XL7 in 270win. Wonderful rifle for the price. ($320 out the door Christmas a year ago)

Let me know if you can't find one.

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/finder/

You can chose to search by Caliber, Use etc...

Example click on Firearms, pick .308 and it will bring up everything they make in 308, pics, prices etc..

I know that Walmart uses Lipsey's.  They carry both the Marlin XS7 and Stevens 200.  Two other big suppliers are Jerry's Sports and Ron Shirks (sp).

It's a good budget gun good price for sure. If you have never shot a rifle or shotgun before a .308 may surprise you with the recoil. Are you looking to start hunting? Deer or ?

Gee didn't know you could shoot beer :chuckle:

A 308 would be good for all that. But for turkey I'd pick a shotgun. Hit a turkey with a 308 and there might not be much left to eat.

The Stevens 200 trigger is heavy "as-is", but it's really easy to adjust it down to about 3-3.5 lbs.  The Marlin has an accu-trigger-type set up.

The scopes that come in a combo (with the exception of Howa) package are pretty low-end.  You'll end up upgrading to a better quality optic.

I'd buy just the rifle... then, use the money saved toward a better scope.  The Pentax Gameseeker 4-12x40 (3" eye relief) is a good scope with a great price (about $70 if you know where to look).  Also, the Federal Intensity (made by Weaver) line are darn good for the money.  Check out www.sportsmansguide.com.

+1 on the crappy scope that come with a package.
Have you looked around at pawn shops? lots out there.

I picked on of those up for a lady friend who is shooting it well...the pkg scope is not the greatest but it works for now.  I'm looking at the new Redfield scopes to top the rifle when the $$ are there.  It seems to be an accurate rifle and runs well.

OK.. Might I suggest that this thread be merged with the duplicate that's in the Ladies Forum?

you know, .308 seems to be a hard to find caliber for me, at least when guns are concerned.  .270s and .30-06s all over the place, and lots of .243s, but very few .308 bolt actions i've seen on the used(or even new for that matter) racks.  i got a feeling people tend to hang on to em ;)

i'm trying to find a good source for a new win m70 featherweight in .308 for when the tax check comes in the mail, haven't had much luck yet.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

You might want to look at used rifles.
