Good day in Sept 09
« on: March 05, 2010, 11:07:53 PM »
Just finally getting around to posting my deer story from last fall.  Finally figured out how resize these pics to get them uploaded

Anyway, hunted Wallowa County in NE Oregon as usual this fall.  Private property, hunted it since I was a kid.  Oodles of white-tails, usually small, but it's fun to see 10-15 bucks per night and no other hunters, plus they eat good.

First night, got there a little late, couldn't get to my stand site as the deer were already out, so I slithered around on the ground for a while, didn't spook anything too bad, and came back in the next day around 2:30 in the afternoon.  My brother set up about 100 yrds to my west, across the corner of an 80 acre hay field that usually filled up with deer as the evening progressed.

Started reading a book, figuring I had at least 3 hrs till the deer started coming out, but at 3:15, I happened to glance over to my brothers stand, and a 3 pt was feeding directely behind his stand, still out of his sight, but only about 20 yrds behind him.  I quick texted him, but he saw the buck just as the text arrived.  Very cool to watch him shoot that deer.

Look at the top picture.  You can see him drawing his bow, and you can see the deer legs under the willow to the right.  Only about 30 yrds from my brother.  Sounded like he shot a 2x4 board.  Obviously well hit, the deer didn't go far.

We sat back down to let the deer die, and I started reading my book.  Not 15 min later, a 4 pt popped out right under my stand.  It seemed to take forever for me to stand, turn, put the book down, get the bow, knock an arrow etc.  All the while, the buck is standing directly under my tree stand, 10 feet below me.  As he slowly moved away just a little, I tried to figure out how to aim straight down.  Ended up hitting him between his shoulder blades, and it exited on the off side, in the front of the low neck/ chest area.  The arrow stuck about 6" in the ground, and was only 33 ft away after killing my buck.  Needless to say, my buck was dead within 60 yards.

Recovery was quick, and we had two nice bucks hung and skinned in time for an early cold one at the local pub.

Overall, a tough day to beat!

Very cool 8)
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

That is truly awesome, who cares if the racks aren't huge.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
