winchester lever action .308?
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:06:02 AM »
a guy I work with says he has a 1957 vintage lever action winchester rifle in .308 and I am trying to figure out what the heck it is....

I thought it would be a model 88 but he said it has an external  hammer. As near as I can tell(which isn't much with this firewall at work blocking firearms websites) the 88 has no external hammer...

anybody?
we're just curious more than anything.
Thanks in advance.

got all that...we're pretty solid on it not being an 88 at this point...it HAS a hammer.
I haven't seen the gun so thats all I got to go on.

I'm bettin that if it is actually a 308win, that it's going to turn out to be an 1895.

I guess I may have forgot to add a crucial piece of info....
the gun uses a 4 shot clip or magazine or whatever you want to call it...the 1895 looks like it may fit the bill.

I don't think he knows enough about guns to even know to think that...does that make sense?

If it ends up being an 1895 it will probably be an '06 I don't think they ever made them in .308win  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_1895

I don't think the 1895 was being made in 1957...... and since they never made it in .308, probably it is not a Win 1895.... :dunno:

And that's what's throwing me. '308win'  The only lever action winchester I'd think would be strong enough for 308win from that era would be the 1895, but yes, production stopped well before 1957. (1940)  I have to believe that there are some in 308, if there were any in 30-06.

So.. That leads me to believe that this guy 'thinks' its a 308. But its either a 307win or 30wcf/30-30. (.308cal) That would put it more reasonably as a model 94 from the date listed.

The only 308win Win lever gun I know of is the model 88 (introduced in 1955) as Jackalope first suggests. But the exposed hammer really throws me.

So, the only lever gun with exposed hammer in 308win I can think of is a Browning BLR. But the BLR wasn't introduced until 1980-ish.

Nope.. Not Marlin either.

I think we're all guessing at this point since we don't have all the information.

Pretty sure I'll find that the gun is not a .308
 :dunno:
He's gonna bring it in at some point so we can look at it together...
