Foxpro Finally!!
« on: March 22, 2010, 05:39:35 PM »
I've been trying hard the last month to try and raise some extra money to buy a foxpro so I can make it a little easier for a newby to try some coyote hunting. Well I sold one of my old cars and got enough money to buy the Spitfire and Ive been out every other day since. I been all over the place and Ive only got one coyote to come in (that Ive seen) but I was wondering how long I should go between hitting up the same spots again. The one that I seen the other day wasnt running away when I seen him but he was keeping his distance (about 40 yards) from the foxpro and was sneeking by real slow. Not sure if he seen me or not but I just wonder if I'll see him if I try calling there again or wait a while????
Plus I just got back from hunting a spot where Ive seen lots coyotes and sign over the years and had something sneak up behind me and break a branch about 20 yards away. I had my back against a tree so I couldnt see the direction from where the sound came from. Its kinda a brushy spot where the sound came from and I peaked around the tree for like 10 minutes waiting to see any movement but didnt see anything. Thing is, its an area where Ive seen a cougar before so it had me kinda on edge there for a little bit.   Good fun!!!

Jesse,

It gets a bit tougher to call them in at this time of year, but if you keep at it I am sure you will nail a couple yotes.

As for how long before going back? I would wait at least a couple weeks and then try with a different sound from a different angle. You might also try a decoy or feather near the caller to help keep it's attention.

Yeah I kinda figured I would need a decoy or something like that to get it in close enough to shoot with a bow. I've tried using a feather hanging from a piece of fishing line tied to a tree limb but if its dead calm out it doesnt hardly move at all. A couple days ago my neighbor gave me a little kids teddy bear and I made a little setup where I have the bear hanging over a tree limb or something like that and have about 20 yards of fishing line run back to me and I just sit there and pull up and down and bounce the bear off the ground. I'm thinking its gotta help things.
I actually called in an owl the other day! I was using the cottontail distress off and on for like 15 minutes and I figured Id try a coyote howl and that made the owl start talking back like 10 yards away! I couldnt seen him from where I was standing so I couldnt tell if it was a spotted owl or bared owl or what. Would have been funny to see him attack my foxpro.  :chuckle:

A feather or battery operated motion decoy is a better option then you pulling on a string. While it does work, you will want to limit as much motion as you can since you are hunting with a bow.
