Oregon State Trooper Sentenced in Game Violation
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:58:14 AM »
"A former Oregon State Police trooper and his son were sentenced in Union County Circuit Court April 6 on charges arising from the illegal taking of a bull elk in Union County.

The former trooper, Timothy E. Gallaher, 53, of Pendleton, had been charged with obstruction of governmental administration and aiding in a game violation.

The state charged that Gallaher, who served in the OSP’s game division, did not advise the OSP of his son’s involvement in a game crime."

I went on a ride along with that Officer about two years ago. Seemed to be a good guy to me, but I guess he thought he was above the law.  :dunno:

24 month loss of hunting privelage for taking a branch bull is not severe enough IMO.

Maybe more to it than the article tells.  Too bad the penalties weren't tougher.

Too bad the penalties weren't tougher.

Looks like his dad took the brunt of the elk killing charges and the kid got off with minimal damage. Looks like his Old Man will be looking for a new line of work too his service spanned 28 years. He faces possible revocation of his certifications as a police officer, which means I believe he cannot work in Law at all. Now that is a life long punishment   :IBCOOL:

I imagine by resigning before the trial he preserved his retirement. I'm not looking to bust his b@#ls, but I thought the hunting related punishment could have been a minimum of five years.

There is no explanation to me for what they did.  I have watched so many "big" branched bulls during hunting season I can't count them, but I never felt the urge to whack one. Sure I am as disappointed as the next guy that the biggest bulls I have seen are when I haven't been able to shoot, but still they are great to see whenever you can.

There's enough illegal activity out there that the punishment that is given out obviously isn't slowing anything down. To me that indicates stiffer punishment should ensue. :twocents:

Wasn't this the guy who's wife got convicted of bank embezzlement back in about 1990 in Milton Freewater? The name sounds right. He dodged a bullet claiming he knew nothing about his wife stealing about a half million from a local bank. I was turning wrenches back then and did some work on his cruiser.

Back then he was being investigated for posting "private property" signs on public lands so he could have his own private hunting ground.

I really doubt he was actually involved in poaching said elk.  It seems more likely to me that his son told him about it and he failed to report his son.
