My Bushnells First Two Weeks in the Woods :(
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:56:42 AM »
I had my first camera (Bushnell) out for two weeks in an area that I've been scouting and my results were sad. I bought the camera on sale last summer for around $99 and I realized it wasn't top of the line, but still I figured I could catch a few decent day light pictures of game animals. I set it up in my house for the first day to figure out how it worked. In about an hour I had around 40 picture of my sons running around the house.  :)  I had my cam mounted low on a tree facing a trail along a clear cut with a fair amount of sign. I threw my apples at 4 feet in front of the cam and 12 feet in front of the cam. Some I even through in brush and underneath fallen branches in hopes that the animals might stick around a little longer working at them. I left it out for two weeks. On my return I was excited when I came upon my camera and found many of the apples gone and the few that were left with huge bite marks out of them! I also saw a few deer in the area on the way up so my sights were high. As I opened up the camera case it flashed, and I peeked inside.......... Only 6 pictures. After I got back to the truck I put my SD card into my digital camera to find that three of the pics were when I dropped it off and three of when I picked it up.  :bash: What am I doing wrong?

Might try putting some wedges between the trunk and the camera so the sensor is  pointed at a downward angle.  My guess is the critters were under the sensor field.

I had it pretty low on the tree..... I kind of figure at worst I'd get some unidentifiable legs! I will give it a try though. I'm going to leave it up in the living room for a day or two and see how it does with distance and different light situations. Thanks for the advice!

I set my camera up in house again for the last 24 hours. There are over 300 photos on it. I'm starting to think I just had it poorly aimed. I'm going to take it back to my spot next week. Hopefully the apples that were left will have some regulars coming by! :)

one thing I always do is test photos before you leave the camera. this ensures your camera is pointed in the right direction. bring your digital camera to check the photos. good luck next time

Sometimes things can walk by but if there isn't enough heat a picture won't be taken.  Be sure to set the camera at a height that the sensor will get the body of the animal rather than just the head/neck or legs.  You'll still get triggerings on heads/necks/legs sometimes but you'll be most successful like that.

Man I had the same exact issues with my camera... all my apples were gone and I had 12 photos... there was nothing on any of them... well except rain drops on the lens... do rain drops normally cause a camera to trigger?
