Sea ducks

The post about sea duck decoys really got me thinking.  What sort of setup is required to get into sea ducks?  I would most likely hunt south sound/hood canal.  How big of a boat is the main question, followed by blinds, decoys, etc.  What do the experts say?

When we went, we had a pretty sweet boat, but didn't even bother pulling the blind up. we threw probably 2-3 doz decoys, all scoters, and just anchored the boat up 15-20 yards away. we crouched in the boat until the birds were wingset then popped up and started shooting at their bullet proof vests. They decoy'd so easy, that was the most fun part for me. we just hunted scoters, but saw some goldeneyes too.


I think you want to go longline decoy setup though. otherwise way too hard to pull in your decoys.

we hunted like a 22ft+ boat i'm guessing. this year I'll be taking our 20ft lund. I've been shopping 18+ft flatbottoms though. I think that's the min that I would feel comfortable in.

Long lines are the way to go.  I use my 18' boat.  I flip up the sides and the scooters come in pretty good.

We use a 16' jon with no blind and sit still, they really don't care. Long lines it the only way to go otherwise to you have 30 decoys with 60+ feet on them.

Like most have said, long lines are the way to go. Most the time we use our 20ft war eagles for boats and just hunt out of them. But every now and then its fun to change it up and get the layouts in the water. As for decoys, just use some old mallards and spray paint them black.
