Idaho Unit 14 Special Hunt for Mulies
« on: June 01, 2010, 01:34:36 PM »
Hey I was just wondering if anybody has hunted unit 14 for mule deer on the special draw permit. I put in for that hunt as well as Unit 14 antlerless elk in December and Unit 18 bull tag. Any thoughts on these hunts.

I did the unit 18 hunt 3 years ago, saw about 8 to 10 bulls in 3 days of scouting passed some rag horns on opening morning and then later that day shot a 300'' 6x6. Very steep where I hunted, but there is some road hunting if your into that- we stayed in the back country and saw a lot of elk. I would recommend getting  in touch with a local with horses if you plan on going in deep, I have a number of a kid if you need it send me a PM.

Hey thanks for the info. Just curious how long did it take you to draw that tag assuming you were a nonresident. And how do I send a PM. I am new to the site. If I do draw I am planning on going as deep as I can to get a nice bull. I am not one to road hunt.

It took about 2 years to draw but since they don't have points yet you chance is about the same everyear. If you click on my name it should give you the option to send me an e-mail.

Hey thanks, I figured out how to send the message. I put myself in last Friday and will be putting my wife in today after work. How did your hunt go? Did you see many deer? And when is the best time to go. The beginning of the season or near the end.

Sorry I never hunted 14 for deer, i put in unit 11 for the deer hunt. I only have hunted in 18 for elk with their controlled hunts.

If you were asking about deer in unit 18, I did see one nice mule deer and a few whitetail bucks but nothing to big, but not enough mule deer that time of year to give you an educated number on them in that area. As for what time of year for elk, if that what your asking, I go a few days before the opener and make sure I'm ready come opening day.

How do you do in unit 11. I thought it was mostly private? what kind of game can I expect along the salmon river breaks between whitebird and grangeville. Elk? Mulie? Whitetail? the reason why I ask is because I have permission for private land down there and have not been down to scout it yet. Just wondering what I might expect.
