first bow elk
« on: June 27, 2010, 11:02:56 PM »
hello,

now that the bug has fully hit and I cant wait for this season I thought i would post my pic from last years first elk ever, also first kill with a bow.

we were walking in, only about a mile or so off the road and we heard calves and cows chirping.  I said, no way, that's another hunter.  but we started cow calling and chirping back at them from a shooting position partly covered.  after a couple of minutes we heard them in the timber next to the road and knew they weren't hunters by the noise of them.  At that point, the fever hit.  I was thinking, holy #$%^, is this going to happen?  well, two little buggers jumped out into the skid road, and I just aimed a little behind the shoulder of the bigger one and WHACK!  the sound scared me it was so loud.  It was like in slow motion, he jumped a little and then i could see blood gushing out the hole i just made.  He ran down the road a ways, I called a couple of times to try to stop him and he turned into a little hollow in the grass, we lost sight of him, and then;  THUMP.  It was over.

I waited a bit, and then went over to where the thump was.  It was the greatest feeling, to take an animal with a bow.  I am hooked to say the least.
of course after we were working on him, the cows came out and were watching from 30 yards away!  well within range, but I was done for the year.

Its true what they say, It is by far the best eating game I have had.  The good news is my family is almost out of it and I'm hungry for more

That is awesome!  I've had two unsuccessful years with a bow, but this is going to be the year!

Good deal on the elk. I too am chomping at the bit to get back after them this year. Elk hunting with a bow is by far some of the most fun a fella can have on this Earth!

Let's hear some more details. What bow? Broadhead/arrow combo? How far? Pass through?

Welcome to the site.

Congrat's on your first bow elk!!!!!  The addiction only gets worse and worse.

WELL DONE!!  Nothing like that feeling just before you realize you're going to release your first arrow toward an elk.  Just something about it you'll never forget.  Congrats!
