I mentioned this in my review this Spring, but they should allow for people to put in for any elk permit. If you draw, then buy the corresponding East or West tag.

-That would be the worst thing they could do! Well besides what they have already done but that would create the ultimate joke of a system! Remember better draw odds, not worse! :bdid:

I talked to the head of special permits for the wdfw today about the new system, probably no changes for 3 years but he did say they are considering making another category. The new category if they decide would be open to those with 10 points or more only, like special elk permits and other game species. They would allocate 25% of the tags given out for the particular unit to those eligible, I like the Idea myself.
-Thats what they were suppost to do this year!! But what about the hunts with 3 or less tags?? Did he say anything about those??

what i find rediculous is people who only put in for a hunt that has a 1 percent chance of drawing and cant figure out why they cant draw it with 10-15 points. if you want to draw a tag put in for an easier draw. i have never drawn a tag and have alot of points and would rather have what we had last year than anyting new.

-If the guys at the top arnt getting drawn then it just stays completly random and will never cycle through! Getting the guys with 16 pts out of the draw pools increases the odds of guys with less points a bunch!  :twocents:

If you look at the statistics, for teh most part the guys with the highest number of points are definately the minority.  Why?  Probably becuase they are putting in for the hardest hunts with very slim drawing odds so they have to wait, points don't guarantee you anything in this state, it just can significantly increase your odds the more points you have but there will always be an element of luck associated with drawing tags.  Even if a guy has 15 points for an OIL tag there is never a guarantee they will draw that tag, not when there are often over 1000 apps for one tag. Thats where luck comes in.

There are too many applicants for too few permits in Washington. You can slice it and dice it up however you want, but that's the bottom line.  Very few will get drawn for the best permits.

Bob's right on this.  There are simply too many hunters and not enough animals for the state to let us kill as many as we'd like to.  We have trophy areas simply because the state has kept the hunters from killing too many by having a hard draw and long-odds general seasons.  If we switched to a system where guys could draw the tags they want every five to ten years, then the trophy potential of those areas would be absolutely wiped out.  You can only shoot so many 330+ bulls in the Nooksack before there are none left to hunt.

Thanks gentlemen, that's just the reality of things here in WA!  I didn't draw with 25 elk points this year, yes 25, not too bummed really.  It's coming eventually.  I'm still hunting and consider it a privelege. l live for the hunt and taking my kids out, special hunts are just a bonus!

I've watched several of these type posts and talked to lots of people in the past about the whole point system and special permits and one option has come to mind that I don't think has been put out there for discussion.  Now this is just for talking purposes and I don't know if I'd go for it or not.  What if for those few really good trophy hunts and rut permits, when you put in and didn't draw, you couldn't hunt elk at all for the year.  Like I said, I'm not sure I'd do it, but I do know a few people that have been putting in for the October Naches tag since they started the points in 1996 and have never drawn it.  One friend with 15 points now has only hunted a few times in all those years as he doesn't have a big desire to hunt spikes.  What if for guys like him or others who are reaching a ripe old age that they may not be able to even go if they ever draw, could just put in for one of those areas or nothing?  I would think that the competition would go way down for those tags and would also drop a few people out of other secondary areas when they didn't draw.  I know for me it would be a huge decision, but maybe, just maybe if the odds were a lot better, I might sacrifice one or two of my dwindling hunting years to try it.

Just a thought....Don't shoot me!!   :)

Since they elimated the 3 day wait for applicants years ago, I really doubt a no hunt clause would fly.

Just more money out of our pocket and into theirs.

 :yeah: :mor:

COOL! Another category where your chances will be worse than ANY other!  :puke: :kneel: :mgun:

Lonedave...another idea... go back to pre  1998 rules where you could buy a general tag and start hunting saturday, OR buy a permit tag, and if not drawn you must wait until the following monday. I know it makes too much sense and would dry up their coffers!

I did ask that question mostly because thats the number of tags I have been applying for, he wasn't too sure about what to do with that but thought maby just take one tag out of the three.
“In common with”..... not so much!!
