Finally sighted in my .500 S&W this weekend.
« on: July 13, 2010, 09:05:21 PM »
I was finally able to take out my .500 S&W Mag this last weekend and get it sighted in. I have a 2x Leupold pistol scope on it. Got it dialed in at 25yds and then moved it out to 100yds. I'm really looking forward to taking it deer hunting this year. If the right situation arises, I'll be using it. I've taken one deer with a pistol, my .480 Ruger and it was alot of fun. Can't wait to see how the .500 performs.

What do you feel is the realistic range at which you may hunt deer with the handgun? I have often wanted to try deer with a revolver.

to me iceman it is the handgun i have a cfp in 7mm-08 i would not have one second thought about shooting a deer under 200 yards with but my 454 casull is 100 yards max i prefer 75 or less on that handgun. kent hunter if you handload you have to try the barnes bullets they are killer in that gun my friend has the hunter model and we shoot it and my 454 side by side and love them both.

The deer that I shot was at a distance of a lasered 113yds. I was useing my Ruger .480. Broadside shot and complete pass through. I feel comfortable taking shots with my .480 at 150yds or less. I wouldn't hesitate to take 200yd shots with my .500 now that I have it dialed in with the scope. I also have a Tarus Raging Bull in .454 Casull. I wouldn't take any shots over 150yds with that weapon either. I really like the big "hand cannons". They are alot of fun to shoot. I'm putting my pennies away and saving up to buy a S&W .460. I like the fact that you can shoot .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull and .460 S&W mag out of the .460.

Hey Carpsniper. I do handload and will give the Barnes a try. After taking that one deer with a handgun, I can see how one could get passionate about handgun hunting.

yep the 460 is a sweet gun, you will love the barnes bullets as well. the 500 is not as flat shooting with the heavyer bullets and i think at past 150 yards the 454 has more knock down as well if i remeber right would have to look back at the books to confirm. it is a blast taking any animal with a handgun very fun. i drew a multi tag this year and am drooling over it but don't know if i can burn my late muzzle hunt in mod firearm but if the right buck steps out the cfp 7mm-08 handgun will put him down in his tracks :IBCOOL:

I am trying those Barnes XPB bullets out in my 44 rem mag.  So far so good - still trying to work up a load.  The hollow points on those bullets look like you could do shots with them!
