I hunted a few times with my grandpas old Remington .300 savage.  I forget the model number but it was one of those old recoil automatics that had a barrel inside another barrel.  The inner one slid back into the outer one when the action cycled.  That was a heavy SOB.

That Remington was probably a model 81  http://mauser98.com/rem8-3.jpg

I still carry a WWII 30-06 once in a while.  Its an M1903-A3. With scope it weighs in at 9 1/2 pounds and still has most of the military stock that's been cut/sporterized.

Steve,

That's it.  A model 81.  I still have the darned thing.  It wasn't working so well the last time I used it so it's a gunsafe queen now.

I have an old 300 Savage that I received after my gramps passed away :'(  cant find ammo for it to save my life, but a nice gun, with a steel but plate.

I have an old 300 savage. It was my first gun. My momma gave it to me when I was 14 ( I am much, much older now) and I don't have any problem finding ammo for it.  :dunno:

Ya I just remember that 303 savage being heavier than the dickens, we still have it but don't use it, and we didn't have a sling for it, so I got a good workout in for a couple years lol

Coach,

I too killed my first deer with a Model 98 in 8mm Mauser.  That's a nice rifle.  Still got that one too.
