What cleaner during break-in?
« on: July 21, 2010, 05:44:19 AM »
Looking for some recommendations on what to clean the barrel with during break-in.

Thanks
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

I'm not a firm believer in breaking in a barrel other than I won't shoot a barrel hot.  Typically 3 shot group for stuff over 3000 fps, 5 shot group for stuff under 3000 fps, and then a cooling period until the barrel is back to pre-shooting temp.

I do like to use JB bore paste before shooting the rifle for the first time and then every few times to the range until 4 range sessions are completed.  It smooths out the barrel from the factory burrs, which reduces fouling overall.

Sweet's is really good stuff. If you want to be sure it is not spoiled just take the cap off and take a whiff. If it knocks you on your **s you got some good stuff. Run a few patches, let is sit for a minute, and clean it out good. Don't let it sit for more than a minute or so.

Kroil, definatley good stuff. Seems you need a couple different oils, some work better on carbon and others work better on copper.
I hope when I die my wife doesn't sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Does anyone else use Wipe-Out. The brushless cleaner. The guy at One Stop in Wenatchee advised I use it and thats all I use now. Its a two part, the bore cleaner and the accelerator. Should I go back to a brush? Sorry 509er not trying to thread Jack, well I guess its still on topic.

I use Butches at the range and then Wipe-Out at home.
