Whitetail in the Chewuch GMU 218?
« on: July 24, 2010, 04:09:13 PM »
I drew a second dear tag in the Chewuch unit for a whitetail doe.  I know of one small area that holds a few whitetails.  I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a second option if I can't find one.  Not looking for any honey holes but a general area.  Thanks guys.  I really need the meat to make it through this upcoming winter.  It goin to be a tough one.  :bash:

No info yet.  Would it be good to check the river bottom?  I know whitetail really like the thick cover.

From first creek down to town has whities.  More and more of them.  Your biggest hurdle will be private property and tree huggers.  Can't help you there.

I've hunted the Chewuch unit quite a bit from top to bottom. It's been a few years but I can't really recall seeing many whitetails during hunting season. I hunted down low the last few seasons about as close as you can get to town and be on public land and didn't see any whitetails. A guy in our group did get a small whitetail buck in that area. My dad saw a decent whitetail buck about half way between Mazama and Sweetgrass near Banker pass but couldn't get a shot. Another guy missed a nice whitetail buck near Buck lake. I've seen a lot of whitetails in the neighboring units Gardner and Pearygin, but not in the Chewuch. Good luck and hope you pop one!

The flats around 8mile creek have some whitey's in there. Find the hucks below Roughed Grouse camp ground. Otherwise, the draw that is WDFW land in the area just south of where the bicyclists park on 100/CubCreek road also has some, that would be below 1st creek toward Winthrop. It's thick in there. Hunt them like you'd hunt Blacktail.

They are almost always in the fields off East Chewuch along the river. That is all we saw a couple weeks ago. Some also on the opposite side of the river further down.

Really no secret for anyone that's hunted Mulies there and spooked out a freeking WT doe. They're like Grouse! They scare the crap out of ya!  And no, the numbers are not big enough for anyone to target them at all. There are many other places in the state that offer much better WT hunting.

Sort of like seeing a Mulie in Little Pend Orielle..   They're there.. Few and far between, but mixed in with the WT there.

There's another thread about crossbreeds... I'd rather see those WT in there become Wolf bait.
