stupid question im sure
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:06:41 PM »
i was wondering if it is legal to hunt with a spear or knife. i have seen a technique done that would definetly allow someone within a few feet of a bear(when done right). i was wondering if it would be legal to spear or even stab a bear. just a question. i dont need anyone flamming me for this. if you wana post regs then please highlight the info you think is pertenant to my question as i am no good at deciphering the states regs. thanks guys.

some states it is legal i have watched time well take many animals with spear. here i don't think it is legal because there is no definition that says a knife or spear if legal to hunt with in the regs. like cross bows: without a disabled permit or in a weapon restricted area they are not legal and if they won;t let crossbows hunt during archery i dought thye will let you chuck a spear. ;) i do have 2 homemade spears that i have made to play with as well. so i have had the same thoughts of you before :chuckle: i also use a spear to use why bowfishing which i know is legal to take carp because it says it in the regs. :IBCOOL: so i get my spear fix that way :chuckle:

Definitely NOT legal in WA. The methods for hunting are clearly outlined in the regs.
Someome tried killing a bear with a spear last year and posted it on YouTube and a couple days later he had a couple WDFW Officers at his house to write some nice tickets.

11. Prohibited firearms/hunting methods
It is illegal to:
• Hunt game birds with a shotgun capable
of holding more than three shells.
• Hunt game birds with a rifle or pistol,
except forest grouse.
• Hunt game birds or game animals with
anything other than a firearm, a bow and
arrow, or by falconry. Bullfrogs may only
be taken by angling, hand dip netting,
gigging, and bow and arrow.

• Hunt game animals or game birds with a
shotgun larger than 10 gauge.
• Hunt wildlife with a crossbow, except
in firearm restriction areas. However,
disabled hunter permittees in possession
of a crossbow special use permit may
hunt with a crossbow in any season that
allows archery equipment.
• Hunt wildlife with a fully automatic firearm.

This means no spears, knives, clubs, axes, air guns...and so on.

:chuckle: No catapults because they are not a firearm.  But cannons are fine as long as they are .45 cal or larger.  You could even hunt muzzleloader season with them. :chuckle:  Or you could make a black powder spear gun.   :dunno:  :chuckle: :chuckle:

unlawful to participate (hunt) in a muzzleloading
hunting season using a firearm that does
not meet the following specifications for a
muzzleloader. As in the past sabots are allowed.
Any type of projectile is allowed.

Only the barrel would have to be that caliber since you can use a sabots the spear shaft could be any diameter.

that was kinda my idea. i recently had some thing happen in my life witch i would like to keep private. anyways these things made me realize we only have a limited time on this earth. to be honest i would rather go out in mortal combat with a bear then in a hospital bed. i have seen people use black umbrellas to get close to bears. there eyesight is bad and they just think its aother bear. check out "bear stocker" on youtube and you will see what i mean. a guy gets withing about 1 foot of a bear and lets an arrow go. the arrow was in the bear before it ever left the string. i definetly would not be using a gerber though. i was thinking my Kbar.

Apparently Jim Shockey use to use the umbrella technique.  Since he now endorses the Shadow Shield that might explain why the umbrella video was taken down.  If it was his video.
