bad luck

Been working hard getting ready for the early elk season. Even took a scouting trip to a new area near Cle Elem last weekend. I try to get into great shape each season and this year is no different. I trade off running spending time in the gym and mountain biking. So I was riding an asphalt section of trail two nights ago when the bike chain came off the front sprocket at about 20mph and I slammed into the ground. Broken coller bone and a lot of road rash to say the least. Here I sit typing with one hand wishing you all a good hunt this season and hoping I will be able to join in on the fun in the late hunt.

Bill, you sound like a dedicated hunter, and I bet you make the late hunt just fine. Sorry about your crash, sounded like a bad one.

Hope you heal up quick! I missed the '08 hunting season due to a bike accident, it sucked I feel your pain. Luckily there are allot of great people that post their hunting stories on here that help pass the time until your back hunting.

that's very unfortunate and just plain awful. I believe I'll be checking out my bike before something happens. Wish you the best in the late season.

That's a bummer to hear. I've raced bikes for years and its a very common injury. The good thing is you can be riding again within a week on a stationary bike. Then back on a regular bike in a month. Heal up quick.

I broke some bones in my back one year. It took a lot of calls to the game dept. but w/a doctors note they would have let me trade my bow tag for a gun tag. As it turned out I was able to hunt, but my buddy's had to pack my elk out for me.

Thanks for all the kind words folks. Looking foward to some good huntin stories. I would also like to mention how important it is to wear a helmet. I always wear a brain bucket and this incident would have made me a vegtable had I not been wearing one. Just a month ago I had my bike tuned up, new brake pads, chain, cassette, cables.handle grips and head set tightend down a tad. The only thing I didnt replace was the front sproket. Go Figure. I do ride a lot throughout the year and I guess if you ride often eventually you will take a fall witch I have done on single track. But this was different. I didnt have time to crash properly.
I had to cancel all my fly fishing guide trips till the end of September at least. I am more worried about that than anything. How long do you think it will take before I can get back on the sticks?

William-
I had a dirt bike accident a few months ago. My collar bone popped out of place and tore some ligaments in my shoulder. I hope you didn't tear anything! I had surgery June 4th, a few pins and new ligaments put in. I'm just now starting to feel normal, but not 100%! I wish you a speedy recovery!

I feel your pain Bill, I had a bike accident a month ago and I can't even begin to pull my bow due to what feels like tears in 3 separate areas (presumably in the ligaments) of my shoulder. The crash happened so suddenly that I didn't have time to stick my arm out to catch me, which my Dr. tells me is the reason I didn't have any broken bones. Unbelievably, it was the first time I've ever worn a bike helmet in my life and it may very well have saved my life, or a least a very serious concussion. I will never go without a helmet again!
I've got 3 more weeks to recover before the season starts and I don't see any miracle recovery coming my way. Looks like I'll be relegated to being the caller for archery elk. Damn!!
