Caping an elk
« on: August 20, 2010, 06:50:37 PM »
Had a taxidermist tell me the best cape for mounting is tubed out. What I would like to know is how the hell do you tub out a bull elk on the ground? I caped my moose and split the neck up the back, couldn't even think how to tub that one. :bdid: Also, the hair line on the back of the neck, do you leave it in tact, cut to one side or right up the middle?

I disagree. The best elk cape is one that is taken off the carcass promtly and taken care of asap. Just split it from the back of the skull down the backbone and try to stay on the top if you can. Tubbing an elk is a pain in the ass. More than likely that taxi hasnt had much or any experiance with an elk in the woods. Now if you kill it in a field and have a tractor to hoist it up, its easy to tube it  ;) Just cut right down the hair line.

Just cut right down the hair line.
So, the long hair line down the back of the neck is where you cut, I know this. Just try and make even on both sides of the cut?

Just do the best you can . Im a Taxi and cut my big bull off center. Sometimes it is about impossible to get it perfect when the animal is on a decline and has pressure points on the critter. In a perfect world your bull will die on a perfectly level spot  ;) It will not ruin the cape if it isnt ccentered perfectly, but it is definately nice when it is. Just do the best you can.
