Gun Choices??
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:44:53 AM »
I really need to get a good rifle with a descent price ive been looking at the 30-06 marlin xl7 and have heard good and not so good things. i have been using my hunting buddies rifle a .308 which is a great rifle but i just want to know what you guys think a good rifle would be :dunno:? i want to have a gun that can take long shots and take down big game like bears and elk but i dont want to have only hamburger meat in my deer :guns:

25-06 with the 110 accubond? light recoil and damn flat shooting round. The marlin's are a good gun for the money, I got a mossberg 243 and theres really only a few things about it that I dont care for but for 300 Im not going to complain. The mossberg shoots 1/2 moa easy with every bullet Ive tried except some factory ammo that wouldnt shoot good out of a howa either. As for hamburger look at a good bullet that wont blow up when a bad shot happends, bullet construction is more important then cal in the subject.

I like my 30-06 for versatility.  Can load it with light bullets to shoot fast and flat, or heavy bullets to put down anything in North America.  And, you can find ammo for it everywhere.  In my mind, Savage offers the best accuracy for price out there.

Marlin or Savage would be good for the money. Also the Weatherby Vanguard. Cartridge really doesn't matter much, but you can't go wrong with 308 Win, 270 Win, or 30-06.

savage, stevens, howa, vanguard...they are good bang for the buck makers, cartridge choice is like picking a color for your car......anything over 243 is gonna be legal and kill anything in this state.  expect some guys to tell you you "need" a 338-378 to kill elk, I am here to tell you that you most certainly do not.

i would really look at the tikka t3 lites around 500.00 and will be a fantastic gun for you. i would look at the 270 or 30-06 for a good all around caliber.

As far as gun manufacturer's, I have a Savage model 16 that shoots amazingly well out of the box, 1/2" groups @ 100yds. I picked it up new for $530. They have the "accutrigger" which is adjustable and has a very crisp release, no creep.  :twocents:

As far as cartridges go, 270, 7M Mag, 30-06 are all great cartridges that will more than do what you are asking. And ammo is everywhere and not too expensive. You can always go bigger, but if you dont need to, then why punish your shoulder. Go with something that you know you can shoot well, and can tolerate the recoil well with. Being a good shot is much more deadly than a big bullet.

X2 on Tikka

I love my Tikka T3 lite in 30-06. I have had it since 2007, killed four deer in Montana that year and killed an elk last year on Bethel Ridge.

I bought my wife the Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06. It shoots great!!! Real smooth, limited recoil (180gr federal, Barnes). Never had an issue. Been knocked around, stays true. Just a thought

Cant go wrong with a Ruger.

I'm sure that's what the aftermarket trigger manufacturers tell everyone... :chuckle:

Ruger keeps them in business. :chuckle:

ROFL! I suspect you are correct.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
