346 Little Naches
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:35:29 AM »
What did you guys think of this early archery unit? We hunted this unit the entire season up around Fifes ridge. We only seen 1 cow and 1 calf, and a few big bulls we couldn't shoot. Where were all the cows?

Same problem in 342!  Guess the cows are smarter than the bulls these days!

i was camped up at sand creek on the roost. had 2 shot opportunities, 1 i passed on 1 couldnt get to the vitals and saw 3 others wth a bugle in the back ground from opening tuesday to friday morning.. i loved it, think it was the best hunting ive done since i started in 2008... but they did get pushed hard, was a few people around camp that got tagged out wth in the first couple days.

There were a bunch of elk up Fifes Ridge for the first 3 to 4 days. After that they moved out of there. You must have missed them cause they were all over. It got hammered though after that so I am not surprised.

Was over there just after the arcgery season ended and all I saw was bulls, 3 spikes and 2 branched.  There was a lot of track, but didn't seem to be many groups so I suspect the archers ran them pretty good.  Didn't hear one bugle all day.

We saw lots of elk and got one in camp.  I had a bull tag and couldn't connect.  The hunt was a blast.

Lots of hunters, but we still found some spots where there was nobody hunting and managed to tag out on the second day with a 5x6.

Smitty, you can hunt in a National Forest. It is the National / State Parks that you CAN NOT hunt in.

Was into cows on day 1 and 2 and saw one rag horn on day 2 also.  After that, never saw (or heard) another elk for the next 4 days.  I was up off of NF 1900, near 1912.  Shot a cow on opening morning at 15 yrds. Beautiful shot behind her front shoulder, but broadhead was stopped by her opposing shoulder and the arrow was still in her with about 12-15 inches sticking out as she bolted downhill. Waited 30 mins until a total DOWNPOUR started.  Lost the blood trail after about 400 yrds.  Blood was simply washed clean away!  Searched for hours in the rain, as well as all day the next day and never found her.  Never heard one bugle the entire week.

I saw very few elk, 3-6 a day, only heard bugles toward the end of season, lots of people. Ended up with a cow about mid-season.
I think the number of people really spooked them.  :twocents:

I started the season on opening day hunting out of camp up the roost road. had seen a couple of cows the day before. There was people everywhere in the woods in that area. After that I started driving over to milk/spring creek area and seeing animals just about every day. just could not get close enough. There was a bull in the bowl I was hunting that would bugle every morning and every night. Saw a 5x5 but dont think that was the bugler. Saw some sign that made me think there was a much bigger one in there. Once I moved I never saw another hunter in the woods.
