Dumb Question

New to muzzleloading, should the #11 cap stay on the nipple or will it fall off easily?

most times number 11's are very good about not falling off the nipple. won't say it does not happen, but it should stay but you can always pinch them a little and they will stay on better.

  I have had this same problem with #11 caps seems to be more likley if it is an older nipple you can try replacing the nipple or switch to #10 percussion caps as they are slightly more narrow. This will also help if your caps seem to split each time you shoot which could cause some small pieces of it to fly back at the shooters face.

I have found that the Knight Red Hot nipple, eliminated any problem with that and eliminated the occasional mis-fire if the cap wasn't on firm enough for some of the other brands. Why it works, I can't answer for sure, but may have to do with the slightly rounded edge as opposed to some of the other brands.

It depends on your nipple, but with mine they stay on and are a pain to take off.  Not saying that it cant happen, but I normally have to use my keys or a pocket knife to scrape mine off

Careful when opting to use a #10 rather than the called for #11.  One of my muzzleloaders I own will only fire with #11 and will not fire when using #10.  Just a caution.  Cannot remember the model but it is a Winchester (think X-150)

If you can find some clear plastic tubing that will fit nipple & cap this not only holds the cap on but is some what water resistant.

switch brands of caps.

Believe it or not they all fit differently.  Remington caps fit on Remington Nipples, but you put other brands of caps on Remington nipples and they don't fit quite as well.  Usually too tight for the remington nipple.  So it takes one for the hammer to push it on tighter and then the second time will make it fire.  I sadly had to show a Gun smith this very thing.  For the 7 years or so that Remington made in-line muzzleloaders in the Reminton 700 frame, this gun smith had been modifying the nipples to make them work.  Wow - he felt like an ass when I told him, here try these, and bang every time.
