Dayton deer hunt
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:16:59 PM »
I'm trying to get my nephew a deer. Does anyone have any info on deer hunting around Dayton? Lots of private property, so I am going to try to find some small pockets that might hold some deer. I have hunted over there for pheasant but not for deer. Just looking for some general info to keep my young nephew interested.

Lots of FFTH land all over. It can be a good area for youngsters due to the number of deer that you see. the only downfall is the number of people. My best memories from childhood are of tromping around those hills. It definitely got me hooked.

If you want to show him a lot of deer and keep him interested, the wheat and CRP are your best bets. Hunting the timber can get a little discouraging from the lack of deer.

Good luck, have fun :)

How old is your nephew? just out of curiosity. BLUEBULLS pretty well has it nailed, lots of land and people, can be less hectic during the week  :twocents:

He is 15. He has missed out on a couple of opportunities that he has had. I am just trying to keep him interested with hunting. It just hard with the general season and trying not to miss much school.

Either the green and white feel free to hunt land or the green and yellow hunt by written permission land. A lot of those guys will give the ok to hunt, especially for the kids. The written permission signs will have the contact info for the landowner.

the nice thing about Dayton is that he can pop a whitetail doe as a youth outside the national forest

We've had a kiddo hunting down there with us the last 2 years and he won't stop killing bucks.
It would be nice for him to kill a doe for the sake of management but he finds and kills bucks every time.
damn 11 year olds anyway.
Never see any elk down there though, it's funny really. I don't get it.

I'll be taking my 12yr old (son) on his 1st hunt, over in Dayton aswell. My older boy has gotten 2 doe in the last 2 years.  This year its little bothers turn & he has to man up, with the rest of us.

GL, if you see a Black Dodge Ram with a Black Toolbox. Stop me and say Hi.  Maybe we can point you in the rite direction.
