WW release sites question
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:43:51 PM »
So does anyone know when they release on the sites? Is it just totaly random or do they have a system. I went to one today and was pleasantly surprised. Flushed two hens but could not shoot because they were flying right at a damn house. Of course they had to fly towards the road and not into the site. But anyhow I hit it for an hour and I saw a few other groups and never heard a shot. Did not seem to be a lot of birds.

They usually put out birds on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. They either do it early that morning or the night before. I think it is more often the evening before. I wouldn't expect to find a lot of birds on a Thursday. But there will always be a few. Try hunting around the edges in the afternoons. Birds that end up off the wildlife area on private property might wander back on after the pressure has been off for a while.

Thanks BC. That is where I found the two hens right on the dang edge and they flew right back out!

Just curious, what choke and shot size are most people using on the release sites?  Seems like my shots have been at a closer range then I expected.

Well I have only been on two release sites and flushed birds twice so not sure if that is enough to give good advice. However both times they were super close. I think pretty dumb birds the first time we went there were three roosters just walking around a few feet from were we parked. Pretty funny.

I use a mod and ic with 7.5 shot fallowed by a 6.  they birds aren't that tough at all most die when they hear a gun go off it seems like.  If you have a flusher that is fast the dog will probably catch as many as you shoot

And there are usually a bunch of cripples that the dog will find. We found a few cripples last Sunday afternoon.

Cheers!
