been getting skunked, what to do
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:31:51 PM »
well i have seen sign. called around the sign. nothing.

so do you all see more bear at dusk/dawn?

i have been calling mostly midday. i stop about half an hour before sunset cause by then i am working my way back to the wheels.

when you call do you keep it going for a good 15 minutes or is that over kill. i usually call for  about a minute then take a short break and begin to whine for the remainder. after about 30-45 minutes i figure there are no bears in the area and move out slowly in case i get one coming in late.

should i stay longer?

should i call more?

what do you all do, calling wise,  when ya find a place that looks like it might bring one in?

I call NON-STOP for 45 min to an hour.  I put a watch out in front of me, because calling for that long wears you out and seems like 2 hours.  But the bears I have watched while calling almost always stop when I stop calling and start back when I start calling, however if you pause too long or they get down in an area where they can't hear you or get distracted I think they meander off.   :twocents:

Of course you could always wear blaze orange and move around alot that seems to work for some guys.

Stay until the last minutes, the last 15 - 30 minutes are the best!

I've only called in a couple of bears, and actually that isn't true- I didn't call them in, the electronic caller did. But with these two incidents, the bears came in both times right at a full hour of calling. At least that is when we first saw them. I have no idea how long they had been responding to the call or how far they came to get there. So I would say to try to give it at least an hour. I don't know if the time of day is significant but both bears came in somewhere around 10 to 11 in the morning.

Personally I would quit calling 30 mins before sundown, you dont want to run into a bear in the dark or a cougar you called in that is hungry and looking for a distressed animal. make sure you have enough light to get to your "wheels". I recommend Johnny sstewarts predator call has been working for me call 30 mins at a time, clean the sspit out of your call and start back up

I call until I can't shoot anymore.  I got a headlamp, they won't bother you.
