ethically speaking its a tough one. you didn't kill the duck so technically its death isn't your fault. some would say not to waste the meat some would say the hawks and possums will put the meat to good use.

I would say if you keep the mallard and leave on teal, you are wasting less meat!   :chuckle:

Definitely cannot scold the dog.. need more choices in the poll. :)
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.

can't be mad at you dog for doing somthing its trained to do. if the dog was kept close and did not wonder around to find the bird you would of just had your limts.

I teach my dog to eat ducks on command just for cases like this.
What I would do is have my dog carry the teal (smaller meal) to the truck. If I see a warden up ahead I simply give the command "COPS" and my dog will swallow the bird.

Easy as that  :P

You guys haven't been hunting very much public land lately. My dog usually has found half a limit by the time we get to our spot we want to hunt. I don't hunt much on public land for that reason.

The game warden would probably let you keep it given the situation and they wouldn't want you to waste it.  Legally he would also have to site you $150.  I guess you can do the math.  I watched guys sail birds all morning on opening day and not be able to find them.  That's why it pays to have a good dog, so you don't loose those cripples.

Never like to see any bird wasted.  If it's a cripple, especially.  May not be "the law", but if it were me, I'd go in to the woods, breast out the bird, put the meat in my bag, and leave.  I just don't think it's right to let something suffer/get wasted, and, for what cause?  Just my $.02.
When you work, work hard.  When you play, play hard.

It won't get wasted.  The yotes or birds of prey would have it ate up within a few days.
