Best .308 ammo under $20 retail
« on: September 30, 2010, 09:46:31 AM »
I dont reload and have no plans to start anytime soon.  i would like to know your opinion about the best .308 ammo for sale under $20 per box.  Regular retail price preferably at a brick and morter store.  I know I can find a sale now and then but, it's often when money is tight.

The only one I can think of right now is the Remmington Cor-Lokd.  It's been killing animals for decades.

then look at the overstocks... http://www.nosler.com/Overrun-Products.aspx

there is .308 loaded with 165 grain accubond for 19.95/bx.  I got some...its HARD to see the blems...usu some staining on the brass or a SMALL dent in the case...for sure it goes bang.  I have 5 boxes that i havent shot up and 3 I have...so its easy.

I hunt with a .30-06. I am not currently set up to reload, either. however, some day I will. For the past five years, I've been saving all my brass. Now I have more than 200 shells which can be reloaded and I know are 1. only once fired and 2. form fitted to my gun.  Keep your shells, even if you don't reload yet.

Federal Power Shok's (the stuff in the blue box) seems to group accurately out of my gun.  Some of the real ballistics pros on this forum can chime in but I think sometimes it just boils down to whether a specific does well for your gun's barrel twist.

A coworker of mine says Hornaday's group really well and since they have the plastic tip or something that you get a little better aerodynamics out of them. I have yet to make the switch. If it ain't broken, why fix it?

So have you been saving casings?  I would love to get my hands on them if you aren't planning to reload. :chuckle:
As for cheap ammo to hunt with I am not sure of any.  I prefer paying higher price to get something I know will work.  Before reloading I was using 180grain Fusion,.about $30 a box.   Now that I reload I switched to Hornady 180grain SST.  Haven't fired one at anything living yet, but it screwed up a Seattle phone book pretty good.

I wouldn't think twice about using Remington CorLokts. In fact, I handload those bulk bullets for my son's rifle instead of paying premium prices for other bullets. If I had to purchase anything for my rifles, I would reach for the Remingtons. CoreLokts for deer, Bronze tip for Elk or Bear.

I've had really good luck shooting the Fusion ammo though my Rem 700 milspec 5R; strictly from the bench, not hunting.  Its in that $20 a box price range, and the 180 gr. shoot as well as Black Hills match ammo in my rifle.  My brother also hunts with the Fusion ammo in 300 win mag, and he kills an elk with the stuff almost every year.

With all the money we spend on hunting and gear the last place I'd ever skimp and try to save a few bucks is on ammo.
For a clean kill.
Shot placement is number one and bullet construction would have to come in second.
For targets or just plinking use the cheap stuff but for hunting theres better ways to save a buck.
