sneaky coon
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:57:21 PM »
2 dead chickens in 3 days. can't figure out how he is getting into coop, I guess climbing the fence. I have a live trap but have zero knowledge of trapping. What is the best way to get this sumabitch into the trap? kind of bait, where to placce trap, or any tricks of the trade would be great. :bash:

Start feeding the coon  dog/cat food outside the chicken pen and put up a light so you can nail the killer :guns:

Make sure you set your traps up off the ground in case you have skunks in the area, they won't climb to go into the trap.  Hang a couple of marshmellows from a wire over your pan, sardines in oil is a killer bait that coons have a hard time resisting.  If you think your dealing with a trap wise coon, you can do a couple of things, put your trap in a large garbage bin or get one of the bucket kits from the snare shop, lots of trap wise coons have met their match with those traps and they only run about $25 at the snare shop.

I've seen those coons climb straight up brick walls.  Was car camping 25 years ago, damn 3 coons opened my car trunk and ate all my food.  Woke us up in the middle of the night with gawd awfull growling and fighting between them.  Cut my trip short.

Is there anything that will attract coons but not cats?  I've been trying to trap a big ass coon that's been wandering through my yard, but I keep getting neighbors cats instead, because I was using dog food in the trap.  I'm guessing marshmellows might not be cat attractants?

A coon will go over an 8 foot fence like it isn't even there.  Even carrying a chicken.  I used canned tuna.  I put some under the trap under the pan.  Some on the pan and the rest on one end still in the can.  I put plywood over the top and and sides and lean a small piece over the end with the tuna so it appears closed.  The coon has to go through the trap to get to the bait.  Some of them are very trap wise.  I also lock up my chickens every night now but there are some that won't come in to roost.  They are my coon magnet.  I have also shot two by waiting for them at dusk.
Good luck.

Get 'em.  I really don't like those foul critters.  I had one decimate a small flock of ducks I had.  Several were killed, some just chewed on alive, and one was just missing from the fully enlcosed pen - I had to finish off 3 hens because they were still kicking when I got to them.  None escaped untouched.  Looked like a horror scene from a movie.  Wasn't exactly sure how he got in until I stayed up the next night and caught him actually lifting the lid of the house (angled roof on hinges - it was pretty heavy)!  He died of lead poisoning seconds later.  Big ol' boy.
