520 Winston late bow elk
« on: November 08, 2010, 12:27:59 PM »
Have heard that the 520 Winston unit is a good area for late elk bow. Any one knows which area of this unit would be best.  I was thinking the NE area as there are less roads but haven't made it up there to see if it is all private land.  Thanks

Winston is going to one full unit. Every wet sider i talked to is headig to the Winston Unit for the late archery hunt.

Sounds liek it is going to be as crowded as Vail is for the opener  :yike:

You could almost change that to " Every wet sider is headig to the Winston Unit for the late archery hunt."

:yeah:
You might want to rethink Winston for late season.   :twocents:  I went once and won't ever go back again even though we got into elk they acted like they had been chased for monthsl We got tired of being over run by people.

Once you get to know it you'll find the holes that not many people go into and youll get into elk.

I agree with bucklucky.  Lots of people but lots of elk.  Me and a few buddies had a patch of timber that we would get into them in everyday all day long.  That is until they logged it.

It is the archery roadhunters capitol of washington! Park your truck and hit some timber. There are plenty of elk in the unit. Most guys just cruise til they catch elk jumping the roads then plan a stalk. Give it a try, there is lots of country to cover and few hunters using their boots. Good luck!

I am going to be all over that unit.  Driving every road many times.  Oh I can not forget to have my new stereo running at 90%.   You know it will be me and my bump, bump, bump woofer hitting the RAP songs while I am driving down all the driveable roads.  Oh yes, I will be hunting then!!!    :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Deerslyr, I'm not 100% positive on this year's closings, but the weekdays are generally locked up, the weekends get opened up for vehicle traffic.

If your biking in you should like some of the heavy crush rock they threw down.   :bash:

 :yeah:

I biked through there during the rifle season and it was nice and packed; the day after it ended, they dozed it up and exposed all of that sharp stone and it was like riding through a glass beach.  Man, was I pissed.  Funny as this $hit only seems to happen to me :chuckle:

I hunted in Winston last year for late archery elk... seemed like the muzzys cleaned up pretty good.

If you're going to the Winston for late season make sure you stay on the roads. That way you won't get lost because some one will be right along to help. Most of the elk are seen from the roads anyways. Everyone knows it's more fun to hunt elk from a truck!  You can stay warm and dry while you hunt. How can it be any better?  Just jump out when you and everyone else sees them cross the road, chase them into the next drainage, get back in the truck, repeat!

Last year during late archery it was a zoo Thanksgiving weekend, after that, it wasn't any worse then anywhere else that I hunt late season. I'll be there again for a couple days during late archery and hope to find alot of locked gates, oh yeah, and elk.  :chuckle:

I went up to Winston for 1 day late archery last year and behind the gate I go into I only ran into 4 hunters. I got within 60 yards of 2 nice bulls. a 5x5 and a 5x0. Unfortunately it was cow only and I didn't see any cows that day. My understanding from my brother who is hunting modern there now is they are opening more gates this year. They opened the gate we hunt behind for the weekend and had a volunteer there to let hunters know it was closed during the week. Good luck there's lot's of animals back there. As has been said on a few other threads get into the timber.
