my first pistol killed buck!
« on: November 17, 2010, 12:03:58 PM »
well today was the day to notch the tag for me. I made it to a piece of timber co ground at first light and this dude posed for me. it was kinda lame really as I was only there for 2 minutes, but thems the breaks! I made a 80yd poke with my 329 pd and jelloed the lungs. a complete pass through with a 240 gr winchester white box jsp.  lemme say that I will be pistol hunting a lot more now!
sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, but it is what I had.

Good job.

329pd.....4" perfectly legal. it does bark pretty good, but I leave all my other 44's at home since this one came along.

Great job!

I'm trying to think of some other questions that could make an otherwise exciting time and something to be proud of a total bummer.  (Obviously (I hope) kidding).

GREAT shooting with a pistol! Congratulations - that is a pretty cool accomplishment.

the gun looks short due to the added 500 s&w grips. I practice regularly at some pretty long ranges. 80yds slightly quartering away was still a pass through. I bet my 300gr beartooths would pass through at twice the distance.

nice buck.  Don't hit e'm any where but the vitals.  There won't be much left.  My buddy killed on with his 44 mag a couple of years ago.  Hit it right in the front shoulder and ruined both front quarters

there is less bloodshot meat on this buck then ones I have killed with fast rifles for sure.

Nice!  That is a hard shot, especially with that gun!  I have a hard time controlling those!

Nice, I took a 2 point blacktail about 20 years ago @ 65 yards with a .44 mag. Ruger Blackhawk, more proud of that shot then any I've made with my bow, buck dropped in his tracks.

Congrats.

Have shot a few boar and one deer with a 44 Ruger Black Hawk but with an 8 inch barrel and all shots under 50 yds with a rest.

Nice shooting. Especially with a 4 inch. Was the shot off-hand or did you use a rest?

off hand. we shoot clays at 50-150 yards in the summer with our pistols. the 500 grips really help, the factory v notch rear has to go in favor of a traditional partridge if you are going to seriously shoot with these. smith makes a 3 blade set of sights for various ranges too, although I only use them on my 6.5" 44.

on a side note, to go with this. both are great authors. read Elmer's book when i was young. i need to get a copy and read it again. some of the stories were pretty great in his books. and jack o connor is well jack o connor, a true legend.

Damn impressive shooting then. Will look into swapping out my grips and change sites.

Something to consider next year....

BTW used to read Keith and O'Connor as a kid and am a fan of both too
