Had some issues with my CVA this last year and am looking at switching to a T/C NW Explorer .50, anyone have an insight??

It seems nobody wants to buy one because they're afraid of the 1 in 48 twist. But if I was looking for a new muzzleloader that one would be at the top of my list. I don't think it would be a problem finding a bullet that would shoot in the slower twist. What issues did you have with the CVA? The CVA Elkhunter gets good recommendations on here, from most people. You might also think about waiting to see what Knight will be putting out in the next few months.

My dad has one and he has no problems with it. A lot of people say the 1 in 48 inch twist makes the gun shoot terrible, but I don't think they have shot one. Dad is pretty darn accurate with it. If I was going to get a diffrent muzzleloader I would buy one.

Arent the Wolverines and Bighorns 1/48? I was thinking they were.

Arent the Wolverines and Bighorns 1/48? I was thinking they were. 

I believe the Bighorn has a 1/28 twist.

Thanks guys, I have an elkhorn now along with about 4 other guys in camp and we are all (Me in particular) having issues with the gun's striking of the cap and it cost me a couple of nice deer this year.  As far as accuracy goes it is not bad.  @Bob - shoot power belts in the NW Explorer??

-Knight BigHorn and Wolverine are 1/28ths twist. If I was you I would look for one of them

Should work fine,shot them for yrs in my Hawken and it had a 1-48 twist shot great 100 grs of pyrodex 295 gr or 348 gr  bullet, I have a Austin Halleck now (retired) and a knight bighorn I shoot 300 gr sst's out of.

I have always went cheap with a CVA buckhorn, etc. They come nailed out of the box at 100yds using pwr belts. I always use 100 grains and dont push the 150 rating because I dont think it does anything for accuracy only velocity. If you ever check the lead after a kill you will know it doesnt need the 150 g's. The problem is as we all know the wear on these guns with the steel. Wouldnt waste my time with expensive stuff unless I lived where you can use a stainless, 209, scoped machine that shoots like a rifle   Remember most open site misses are due to over shooting because you dont bury the front pin deep enough based on out of box sited in guns.

I bought a NW Explorer last spring and have fired about 250 rds. through it so far.  I started with the Maxi-Balls and Hunters.  I was only shooting about 4" groups.  I then switched up to some 300 grain Hornady sst with 100 grains of Pyrodex pellets.  It now shoots less than a 1 1/2" group at 50 yds and 2 1/2" at 100yds.  I kind of scratched my head a bit because I was told that the 1:48 twist was not designed to shoot sabots.     I am happy with the gun overall and would replace it with the exact same thing if I needed to.
