I've heard it put this way...

"the 7mag is about 100yards better than the 06' "

pretty decent rule of thumb if you ask me.

I have both and love both.

There is a huge difference between a magnum round and non-magnum round (energy and velocity).

Boy the marketing guys for gun and ammo manufacturers sure fooled a lot of people when they came up with the term "magnum."   :chuckle:

"Magnum" Yep, that word has made Billions of ego dollars.

Off topic here, I have killed 5 deer with the 140 accubond from my "little" .270win and the bullet has whizzed clean threw all of the deer. Yardages were 70 out to 274. I have yet to see the big entrance hole, and have yet to see one not go threw a deer. Interesting.

These caliber depates get a little old to me. Any gun in the right hands is going to kill animals. Pick what you can get the best deal on and shoot it until you get good with it. Shoot at different yardage to see what it does and go from there. I enjoy shooting. I have one of each caliber listed plus a lot more. They are all great guns.

I bow to the wisdom.  My wife's grandfather traded his .300 Weatherby for a .270 and continued killing elk (at long ranges) for decades.  It's all about putting a good performing bullet where it needs to go.

without a doubt, 7mag. flatter and faster in my opinion and if your recoil concious to me the 7mm is better. Dont give me wrong the 3006 is a great caliber but the 7mag is better. :twocents:

7 Mag kicks more so not sure why it would be better for someone who is recoil conscious. ???  And as for being flatter and faster, it's only a minuscule amount. Not noticeable in any practical sense.

Have both but really love my Husquvarna 7mm. Killed more animals though with a winchester model 94 30-30.

On the contrary, I find these rifle and handgun caliber debates fun and interesting and a great way to learn something new and stay engaged during the off season (also commonly known as the Western Washington Monsoon Season running from Halloween until the 4th of July)!   :P

I own both.  I like both.  I've killed with both.  I've killed elk at 300+ yards with both.  In the final analysis ...

Sorry.  I like both  ;)
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

With a good bullet and a well placed shot you can kill anything with just about anything, but out of these two I'd get the 7mm mag just because I already own an 06.  I've noticed nearly everyone owns or has owned an 06... Hmmmm coincidence? I think not

Father shoots a Browning 30-06 Semi Auto.

Has sworn he will hunt with nothing else. I had a 7mm and loved the gun....

My answer both will kill anything in this country
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

That's a tough call.  The 7mm is faster, the 30-06 shoots fatter bullets.  Unless you plan to shoot at distances past 400 yards, the faster 7mm offers little advantage in terms of trajectory.  If you plan to do a lot of long distance shooting I'd recommend a 300 Magnum anyway.  For all around versatility, factory ammunition availability and selection the 30-06 comes out ahead IMO.  My 9 year old shoots my 30-06...with reduced recoil 125 grain loads: factory ammo.  I killed an elk earlier this year out of the same gun with a 180 Nosler Partition that left the barrel at 2880 ft/second: factory ammo.  That's an amazing spread.  Your odds of finding a perfect factory load for a gun are higher with a 30-06.

If you handload the scale tips towards the 7mm.

I gotta back up big Bob on this one. And like he already said, a 30-06 kicks a lot less than a 7mag for basically the same end result.

I used the 7mm before I got my 30-06. Less recoil and fairly cheaper factory ammo with 30-06.
Both rifles were the same brand. 7mm was a nicer rifle, very accurate, but I could not shot it as well as I can do my 30-06. So, if you intend to buy and use only factory ammo, if you care about your bore life, go for 30-06. 7mm rem mag will shoot out the barrel after 1500 rounds, while 30-06 can go 3500 to 5000, according to most statistics...
Sure enough, you get more range with 7mm. I don't care for that kind of hunting anyway.  :twocents:

Ginger or Maryann?  If it were me, I'd take the 7mag, but if they were out of stock, I wouldn't hesitate to take the '06.  I say 7 mag because most of my hunting in the past included the real probability to poke out past 300 yards.
Ginger or Maryann?    :yeah:  I choose both (as same with option of 7mm mag or -06)  as I'm a greedy SOB and don't want to choose...this is the exact reason I'm going to need to buy another gun safe is I can't make the decision of one over the other...oh well partial empty gun safe means room to buy/store more guns!  With current events things could be worse than agonizing the decision on which caliber to buy
