That is a good question.
I have never seen in the lower Valley of Yakima. I do know of a guy that got a couple that he mounted but that was it.
My grandpa said there use to be some around the Yakima Valley but that was in the late fourties and fifties but since then not a one.
not sure but I think the state may have planted them back then.

We had some that wondered over from the pheasant release site.  I use to call them up by whistling to them while sitting on the porch.  It freaked my wife out when I called one and it landed 10 feet away from her in an oak tree that she was sitting under.

...So this begs the question, how does one identify a Valley/Bob White/Mountain quail while in a hunting situation? I know there is a moratorium on mountain quail...and I have always wondered how to make a quick I.D. on one.

Bobwhites are about half the size of valley quail and are white and brown.

If you can differentiate the "Square peg ,Round hole" you can tell the difference in them all, they are not even close in looks. Sharptails and Hen pheasants are tougher to identify in certain situations,

Bob’s & Valley quail are pretty easy to tell apart.  I’ve never seen a “Mountain quail” or maybe I have.  Are they the same as the blue quail, a.k.a. scaled quail?  Shot a lot of those in Texas, Bob’s too.

Firing center has them.

No, mountain quail are not scale quail.   If I wasn't at work I'd dig up some pics of each for you.  Mountain quail are quit COOL, and quite nice sized.

Generally speaking, you won't see mountain quail where a normal person would hunt valley or Bobs.

Mountain quail are normally in the Mountains....  The males have a long, about 2", straight feather off their heads whare a valley quail has that little curly q .

Valley look similar to the Gambels in the pic.

As a rule of thumb mountain quail like to be in the mountains, I have seen them in the 3000 to 4500 range. I also usually find them where I hunt blue grouse, they love huckleberries.
