Muzzloader???
« on: December 31, 2010, 09:23:33 AM »
Howdy
I know very little about muzzleloaders.  My daughter got a TON of Cabela's gift cards for Christmas and wants to buy a starter muzzy.  She is looking at the Traditions Timber Ridge that they have on sale.  I am wondering if they are legal for hunting in this state and if they are an okay gun or a pile of crap.  I know that it is a cheap gun but is it okay for a starter for a kid until she decides whether she likes it enough to graduate to a better muzzy.  I am buying a CVA Elkhorn Pro for myself but it is too big for her to handle.
Thanks!

I know that gun uses a 209 ignition that is not legal here. I am not sure if they make a conversion kit. That would make it legal for hunting here, by switching to #11 or musket. I am really turned off my traditions muzzleloaders. I am not sure if a gun shop could chop the stock and fit like a elkhorn to her better. The other option is knight, they are going to be putting some guns out. They have made some good smaller frame guns. Hope this helps if you have any more questions i would be happy to help.

Thank you!  I wasn't sure if it was legal or not.  I don't know anyone who has any Traditions guns so I didn't know if they were worth looking at.  I think that I will add some of my hunting fund $$ to hers and look for a better quality and legal gun for her.  I really want her to get a Remington 700 youth .243 but she is stubborn like her old man and wants to hunt bow or muzzy.  I just want her to get her first buck under her belt before committing to any weapon.

Good for her! That's cool that she wants to hunt with a muzzy or bow! But i agree, any weapon that she can get her first buck with, is a good one

I hunt with a traditions I bought it about 6 or 7 years ago, its an ok gun, I have had a few misfires with it, one was while I had a 80 yard broadside shot on a HUGE couger, that one still haunts me. But I have killed a elk and a deer witth it. In my opinion it would make a good beginer gun to see if she likes muzzy hunting before you drop a lot down on a more expencive model. I hope this helps

I was going to suggest the CVA Buckhorn but I checked Cabela's website and it says it's sold out.  :dunno:

That would be a pretty good choice! I have never shot one, but most who have seem to like them. They are not very much. The stores might have one in. "If they are out on-line"

Thanks folks, I will check them out.  It might be cool for her to have one similar to her Dad's muzzy!

Try this guy.  Good price, light, and ultimately customizeable.  Weathergirl and I each have one.  Save the gift cards for accessories.   http://bluegrouseblackpowder.webexone.com/login.asp?loc=&link=
