Birds are HOT!
«
on:
April 24, 2008, 07:40:11 PM »
I saw over thirty NICE toms in shotgun or bow range today. Plus many more. THEY ARE HOT. This weekend ought to be gangbusters for you. I honestly paid little attention to them, wasn't even in a picture taking mood. I was trying my dangdest to find some antlers. Of couse it snowed some more up high.....by the way...heres a hint go high on the snow line.

I think if you held still long enough they'd be humping your leg like a little Terrier. Timing is perfect right now. There were alot of single Toms and they were higher than the hens. They'd respond to anything even the worst caller on the planet. I was just playing with them with my mouth and regular bird calls, with no diaphram and they were going nuts. I'm horrible, as I think I even have a tag, but have little interest in the fellas. No, this was up in the NE corner. Public land though and no company. I ran into a couple grouped up still with hens and they weren't that interested in anything but eating. Those were lower. The hotties were up in the snow.

*censored*!
I decided yesterday not to make the trip over for gas reasons and I have a memorial service for my Godmother on Sunday. Figured since the hunting sucked I was not missing anything.
Thanks alot Bone! Now I am kicking myself! (Though the memorial is important to attend)

THere will be lots of birds then too guys. If you suffer from not being a very good caller though, this weekend is going to be the chit. They wintered amazingly well. They haven't been fighting too much so are full feathered. I saw one missing about half his tail feathers, so either someone shot at the wrong end or a coyote tried ot have a snack.

This has me sitting here calculating time and fuel costs in the Dodge. How much will I spend and how fast can I get there, hunt and get to Anacortes on Sunday for the Funeral? It would cost me an arm and a leg or more, but I really do not want to sit this weekend out!

Honestly you should be able to get it done Saturday anyway, and then be on your way home to process the bird, but you are tlaking to a guy that just spent a fortune for 4-5 hours of hiking.

What a great weekend to be alive. Fishing season opens, Turkeys are hot, grouse are drummin, Roosters are too. Tweety birds are migrating through, supposed to be low wind, and pushing the 70's. I'm going to choose to stay home to be with my family, and its a big soccer weekend, but that is just as good. Life is GOOD in Washington.

I'm starting to get excited. I'm heading down to southern Oregon on Wednesday for some big Toms. It sounds like my timing should be about right. Good Luck to all.
