300 Savage
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:17:36 PM »
Hi All,

I'm new here and from what I see it's a nice place to hang out.  I was wondering if anyone out there shoots a 300 Savage and what they think of it.  I just picked up a 99 in 300 and from what I have seen it's going to work well.  I would be interested in hearing your stories.

Welcome. I don't have a 300 Savage but I do know in power it falls between the 30-30 and the 308, so it will be an ideal deer cartridge, especially for hunting in brushy country where a long shot would be 150 yards. Does your model 99 have a scope on it?

Yeah it has a 3-9 Pentex on it.   To bad too because if it had not been drilled and tapped it would have been Worth way more!

I used a model 99 .300 savage lever action for the first 5 years I hunted. Worked great for the blacktails over here on the westside. I shot over the counter 150 grain bullets and it did the job. It's still my #1 brush gun, and it still shoots like a champ after alot of abuse.

I shot a 99 in 300 Sav for a few years and I just picked up a Rem 722 in 300 Sav and am working up some loads for it now.  I ran a 99 in 308 also and find little difference in power between the two, it is much closer to the 308 than the 30-30.   My favorite load for thick country whitetail is the 180gr RN factory load.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Thanks to all of you.  Does anyone have any experience with it on elk?  I know it used to be a hot runner back in the day.  The guy I got it from said he had shot several elk with it.

It will work on elk. It may not be the most ideal cartridge for elk, but if you're picky about what shots you take you'll be alright. As has been said, it's only a small step down from the 308 Win. I would consider 200 yards to be the absolute maximum range for elk with the 300 Savage. But up to about that far it ought to work as good as anything else.

Thanks to you all.  I look forward to hanging around and listening to all the words of wisdom.  Anyone live near Poulsbo?
