Try a Savage. They are almost always accurate straight out of the box. Some guys think they're ugly. But that's about their only downfall. Personally I think they look fine. Don't own one, but if I was looking for a rifle and didn't want to spend a lot I think a Savage would be the first I'd look at. This one looks about right to me:

I had another thought...for even less money you can get the Stevens model 200. This is the same gun as the Savage, just without the "Accutrigger."  I think they can be had for less than $300. That should leave you enough to buy a decent scope.

CoasththunterJ  has a very nice 30-06 in stainless, synthetic stock and already scoped for sale. Not sure of the price. You should contact him for photos and details.

Here is a pic of both of my savages they are in  .300 wsm  They both shoot the same loads.  They will both shoot a 3/4 group at 100 yrd with 180 grain round.  I recently upgraded to the stainless model with the removable mag and adjustable muzzle break.  Without the Leopold scope the rifle was under $400 bucks.

I would have to agree especially for the price, the Savages are hard to beat. Very good accuracy and a great trigger for baseline prices.

i own 03's, 700's, 77's, and 70's.. but i will have to say my 338 savage is the most accurate by far. and much cheaper than the others. my only gripe is the savage lacks a non rotating claw.. other than that.. i would say my savage is as good or better than the other ones. i have noticed from other shooters and my own obs, that savages have GREAT barrels out of the factory.

Savage or Stevens they will not let you down . Shoot good right out of the box. Plus you can adjust the triggers or do any upgrades yourself. Even changing barrels ,and calibers

I have a Tikka 30-06 T3 lite. Its super light weight but does have some kick compared to heavier rifles like my 03-A3. Its affordable and shoots great. I get groups of 1" @100 yards with cheap factory ammo, right out of the box. No complaints there. Has a removable magazine as well.

Tikka T3 lite. I have two, a 30-06 and a .338 win mag. They are light weight, easy to carry and very accurate.
