Turkey advice needed!!
« on: May 04, 2008, 08:07:05 PM »
I have a decent spot in washington to hunt turkeys and have been out several times. But everytime i go out i can't get the gobblers to come any closer than 150-200 yards. They just lock up and won't come any closer. Any help as to what i'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Are they with hens? Are you using a decoy?

If they respond and don't budge, then to you need to take your sweet time and move toward them.  However, do not, I repeat use your turkey calls to pinpoint his location....and as you're taking you sweet time to get there....use locator calls (crow, owl, peacock,goose,woodpecker....whatever).  They may not respond every time but all you need is an occasional response to eventually figure exactly where he is.
Those gobblers are either with hens or in their comfort zone.  If you can get within that zone, let things quiet down...then make a few soft....and I mean soft calls, they will likely come to you.  If not, you probably are not quite within that zone yet.
This is not stalking....it is only getting you in position where they think one of their hens has come to get bred.  They will go to her once she is in it as it's a relatively small area.....but if not, he will wait until she is.
Remember in the turkey world the hen generally goes to the gobbler to get bred, not the other way around, although less dominant toms are always trying to hone in..that's why alot of toms come to calling.
I think you dealing with the norm though....a mature dominant gobble in his zone with a less dominant tom keeping him company and warding off intruders.  If this is the case, he is not going anywhere...you have all day to deal with him.  Easy to kill if you take your "sweet time" and don't get in a hurry, have patience to get yourself within his comfort zone without detection, call softly.....and have gun ready.
Killed several birds this way....works great for that gobbler 1/4 to 1/2 mile away and just keeps responding from the same spot.....just pretend you're a hen an take your time (they take forever, sometimes half a day to get to him and the other half going back to their nest to lay an egg)...again locator calls.  Oh and if you are not close enough when you think you are..he will probably gobble but not come.......ok to use hen calls when you thought you were there, because you are getting close and he's waiting.  Take alot time and relocate closer...quiet is the key.  Get situated and wait 15 minutes and then softly call again. If now something changes...i.e.  gobbles only once, when he gobbled several times, or no gobbles.... move in slow motion, get gun up....look and listen.  He's looking and coming for you as you are close enough.....that is unless you gave yourself away and he exited  area.....but don't assume anything without waiting it out....patience.

If you can hit that bird around 1000 in the morning, he'll probably be by himself by then and you have a much better chance getting him in.  He's most likely got plenty of girlfriends.  In turkey hunting you are going against mother nature in that hens go to the gobbler.  He gobbles they run to him, normally it's not the other way around unless he has no girls.  Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

You may want to just hunker down and give em some time to work in.  Seems like alot of the birds just aren't being real responsive.  Had lots come in silent this year just slinkin in.  So try some soft callin and don't get real aggressive unless the ol boy is goin nuts.  In other words kinda play hard to get.  Like Machias said... long about 10 or so he may come looking for that hen when he's lonely.

We were bowhunting from a blind and it's is an open field i was sitting on the tree line with 3 decoys(2 hens and a jake)15 yards in front of me. we called in one tom with about 4 hens into 150 yards but they didn't want to come any closer and cross the fence. After they left, 3 lone toms came to the same spot and also didn't want to cross the fence line and come any closer. I would of snuck up on them when the were on the other side of the hill but i can't hunt the past the fence. When setting up we didn't call at all and waited a good 10 minutes after putting up the blind to let thing settled down before we started calling.

the other property i am hunting they do the same thing but it isn't open fields it more brushy and wooded. I haven't seen the turkeys since i can't see any further than 75 yards but i hear hen calls so i guess they are henned up. there is 2 different flocks of turkeys and i heard about 4 different gobblers. The other day a lone hen comes past us at 40 yards callin and goes straight to the gobblers and they went nuts.

We have had the same thing here.  The bad thing is the hens aren't sitting on the nest yet, so they are keeping the toms from wanting anything new.  I think it we will have some better midday action over the next couple of weeks.  We spent 14 hours in a blind Saturday and all of our action was at fly down and fly-up.  Sunday we hunted in the morning and eveningand had just as much action.  We have some real nice footage so far this year, but need a few more kills on camera.

I like to set up where I can't see much more then my effective range.  Lots of toms will come in close enough to where they should be able to see the hen and look for her.  They won't come any closer becuasue they should be able to see her and can't.  That way if your set up and can't see, say over a little rise, more then 30 to 40 yards they will strutt right into that zone, thinking she must just be on the other side of this little hill.  :):)

If your hunting a field, then I always like to have some sort of decoy.  Try to set up where you have seen the birds entering and leaving the field.  Right now you are almost ambushing a bird.  Only give a few calls to let them know you are in the area, then tuck the calls in your vest so you won't be tempted to use it again.  If you are puting up a b-mobile, I would use a jake fan right now.  If you don't have a hen decoy, I wouldn't set it up.  Make sure the strutter is facing the hen.  Once the ens start sitting on the nest, you'll be able to call them intoyour set-up.  This is just my  :twocents:  Good luck.
