And are they shooting standard 7mm Rem Mags? Or STW/Ultra Mags?

standard 7mm mag and take animals consistantly out to 1000yds! 168gr. loads.

Browning left handed 30-06, topped with a leupy 3-9x40, spitting out 165gr hornady interbond light mag/superformance.  That combo is good out to 450-500 yards.

If you looking for a 300 I got to put a vote in for the 300 rum. I got the rum and it is a great  long range gun.

i agree with Hoyt202. 300 rum is a great gun but remember everytime you shoot it you sending  dang near 4 bucks out the barrel. lol. i shoot the 300 win mag. i shot alot of animals with it great gun. it will reach out there and touch them. the 180 grain cuts the wind like butter. runs about 22 bucks a box of 180 core locks. if you reload you spend about 45 bucks and can make 150 rounds if you have the brass for it. theres my  . good luck in buying a rifle.

I saw one shot at 900something yards...standard 7 rem mag's. 168 grain Berger's I think.
I can't get on the Berger site here at work due to the lame firewall.
Longrange7mm on here should chime in...he knows that stuff a hell of a lot better than I do.

For the most part, those boys shoot 7mm Rem mags with 168 berger vlds. Giant BC's with that bullet.

When you open the old school book on ELK, the 338 Win Mag is on page one.  Page two is the 300 Win Mag.  (Not by much)

Everything else is after those (IMHO), but I'm an old school kind of guy.

They aren't cheap but man, they do some damage especially if you need a long range weapon

Thanks for all the info. I have looked at the 7mm/7mmstw. I am interested in 1000 yard shooting. When I had my 270 which I sold a while back I shot alot and Played alot out to 1000 yards. To give a idea how much I enjoyed shooting I shot about 2500 rounds through it in about a years time from the date of purchase. I will be looking real hard at my options and reviewing the thread on the 338 edge since I have wante done of these for a while. This would be a fun 1000 yard coyote rifle!!!

My "elk rifle" is a Masuer/35 Whelen, but as much timber hunting as I ended up doing last year, I could have just taken my Marlin lever gun in 35 Remington, with the hot Hornady ammo, and I'm sure I would have been plenty well armed.

I'm in the middle of building another Masuer, in 6.5 Swede, and I think that would also be a totally adequate elk rifle.

And who knows how many elk have been taken in the last 100 years with a 30-30?  And a boring old 30-06 should cover almost any reasonable elk hunting scenarios as well.
